STILL DREAMING

This critically-acclaimed film documents a unique take on Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" when a group of retired actors, dancers, and musicians now residing at the Lillian Booth Actors Home are coaxed back into the spotlight. And nothing is as it seems. As the rehearsal process unfolds with the help of two young Shakespearean co-directors, the actors find themselves experiencing both the pain and exhilaration of re-immersion in their life's work in the midst of aging challenges. The realities of Alzheimer's and dementia, as well as, physical, visual, and hearing limitations (and self-confidence) create constant obstacles, but the show must go on. And go on it does, resulting in an energetic performance that surprises and transforms everyone involved. This life-affirming film reminds us that the human need to continue to grow and share oneself transcends age, dementia, and even the societal limitations we place on ourselves and others. It also leaves the viewer with a burning question: What more can older adults and persons with dementia continue to do when encouraged? Still Dreaming urges us to find out.

WHAT TIME IS LEFT

A story of family, aging, and the passing of time...

Told from the point of view of the filmmaker/grandson (in his early twenties), who'd had a brush with death himself, this moving film opens up a quiet storm of issues concerning how we all live and die, and how we face or choose to ignore the looming end-of-life choices that affect our aged loved ones--and ultimately, ourselves.

Through the voices of three generations of the family, the film candidly follows the extended Henerson family as they care for two grandmothers who live in the same retirement community - Grandma Polly is in an advanced stage of aphasia, and can no longer walk or speak; Grandma DeeDee is healthy and active, consumed with concerns that her Living Will is followed to the letter. Through unforgettable moments and characters who are both surprisingly funny and heart-wrenchingly honest, the film reveals the web of human connections that keep a family together in the face of death, decline, and the unpredictability of life, itself.

I REMEMBER BETTER WHEN I PAINT

"The creative arts are a doorway, and once that doorway is open, wonderful worlds open up. Creative arts are an avenue to tap into a non-verbal, emotional place in a person."

This internationally-filmed DVD documents the use of creative workshops, artistic expression classes, and trips to the museum as an effective therapy for persons with dementia. As it explains what happens in the brain of a person with Alzheimer's and highlights current research, it shares real examples of persons with Alzheimers' who "come back to life", and experience elevated self-esteem and positive mood changes when engaged in art and other creative outlets.

Narrated by Olivia de Havilland, the DVD also documents the positive effects of artistic expression of the late actress, Rita Hayworth (as shared by her daughter), and the extended case study of artist Hilda Gorenstein. After being diagnosed with Alzheimer's, Ms. Gorenstein eventually reclaims her paintbrush and a better quality of life, creating over 300 more paintings. Full of realistic and achievable hope, this DVD heartily encourages the integration of creative arts into the daily activities--and lives-- of persons with dementia. A must-see film!

BEAUTIFUL HILLS OF BROOKLYN

Based on the journal of 89-year-old Jessie Singer Sylvester, this multiple award-winning film, richly captures the inner (and outer) world of an elderly woman dealing with the changes in her life. Set in the backdrop of her beloved Brooklyn neighborhood, Jessie's mundanely honest, yet life-affirming, story gives us a glimpse of the joys and sorrows in her life. We experience along with her the joys of poetry, music, and the Botanical Garden, as well as, the sorrows of losing her sister, friends moving away, her increasing forgetfulness, and losing a sense of security in the neighborhood she's lived in all her life.

This "study in aging" sheds light on what countless older adults experience in their later years, and gives insight into the great impact care providers and family members can have on an older person's life. An excellent training resource for social work/gerontological studies.

    SURFING FOR LIFE

By David L. Brown and Roy Earnest

Surfing For Life is a documentary about healthy aging and life-well-lived from the unique perspective of 7 male and 3 female surfers who have been surfing since the 30's, 40's and 50's and now range in age from 60 to 93. Through interviews centered on key aspects of healthy aging, along with archival and present day footage of the film's subjects surfing and living their lives, an entertaining image of successful aging emerges. For surfers and non-surfers alike, this program celebrates life and encourages the viewer to pursue whatever hopes and dreams inspire passion.

From a gerontological point of view, Surfing For Life is an intriguing exercise in applied gerontology and can serve as a springboard for discussion about holistic aspects of healthy and successful aging. The interviews touch on many of the hallmarks of successful aging such as exercise, diet, reminiscence, intergenerational involvement and mentoring, healthy acceptance and management of the physical changes that come with growing older, stress reduction, family relationships, long-term friendships, a sense of community, being of service to others, spirituality, an elemental connection with nature, and joyful peak experiences. The program leaves viewers with a renewed sense of the human potential of later life and provides a powerful alternative to the largely negative view of the capacities of older people held by many in our youth dominated society.
