DESIGNER CASE STUDIES: ARCHITECTURE, CRAFTS AND INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

Broken into three distinct sections - Architectural Design, Craft Design, and Industrial Design - this program explores the work of three vastly different designers. In 'Architectural Design' we talk to Aaron Wallis and Wade Trevaen from Convic Design, architects of the world's largest skate park in Shanghai, China. In 'Craft Design' we visit Steve Baker, glass blower from Bristol Blue Glass, producers of fine hand-blown glassware. And in 'Industrial Design' we hear from Alicia Mintzes, designer of Sharp Safe, a prototype sharps disposal unit for public spaces. We ask these designers a range of questions and see them in action to reveal their design process.

DESIGN FOR SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainable design is the art of designing physical objects to comply with the principles of economic, social and ecological sustainability, reducing use of non-renewable resources, minimising environmental impact and relating people with the natural environment. In this program we'll look at the principles of sustainability in design; the negative effects of waste - an Australian case study; minimising wastage; and examples of sustainable design in architecture, fashion design and graphic design and printing.

SOLAR SAILOR

Solar Sailor clearly articulates the choices that need to be made when designing, constructing and operating a commercial boat. Robert Dane takes us through a personal journey that starts with an observation and a question, and results in the building of a ferry for Sydney Harbour, that utilises a hybrid power system. Interviews with Grahame Parker, Naval Architect, show the importance of planning and testing to produce maximum efficiency. This program is an informative, rich and valuable resource to use when studying the design process, including investigating, designing, producing and evaluating. Students' science knowledge and understanding will also be vastly enhanced, specifically in areas such as energy, power sources and alternative energies.

DESIGN: APPLYING THE ELEMENTS

This program examines the design elements and principles in areas such as; architecture, environmental design, interior design, structural design and landscaping. Featured are several professionals and urban designer, Mark O'Dwyer, who provides a range of examples. A range of products are examined, which vary from presentation of food to industrial machinery. In all cases, an analysis of the basic elements and principles of design can be made. The program also analyses the design of web pages, the Windsor Smith billboards and the modelling of a radio station's computer network. Thorough and concise, this encompassing program will assist all design students.

ENGINEERED WOOD PRODUCTS

The program introduces the topic of wood products with a brief discussion concerning the diminishing old growth forests and the need to find alternative products. The overuse of timber in today's society with both plantation forests and the engineered wood products is discussed, including Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL), Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF), Plywood and Chipboard. We are then given a detailed explanation of how the four engineered wood products are manufactured, from the initial timber felling stage at the plantation to the finished board ready for sale, with each example based around a different production company and location.

MECHANICAL SYSTEMS: COMBINING SIMPLE MACHINES

From basic devices to heavy machinery, various examples are used to demonstrate how mechanical systems rely on simple machines to modify forces and movements. From a technology perspective, this program examines the role of simple machines in mechanical systems.

  • The lever and fulcrum
  • The wheel and axle, gears, cogs, sprockets
  • The pulley
  • The inclined plane, screw, wedge
  • The piston

    GRAPHICS: ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN

This two part program follows the six steps used by an architect in building design. At each stage the various graphic communication techniques involved are examined. These include:
  • client discussion
  • concept stage
  • sketch plan
  • working documentation
  • developed design
  • contract administration

    ARCHITECTURAL AND INTERIOR DESIGN

This program is divided into three parts. In part one we look at the design process and the number of different ways available to the architect to communicate his design ideas to the client. We see why the computer has become an essential design tool in having the ability to manipulate, copy and make any changes easily and without the need for redrawing. We are shown the vast range of materials, furnishings and floor finishes that the architect has to decide upon. Part two considers the restraints with that an architect may come across. In this case a problem of a shadow being cast across an adjoining park is resolved. In the final part we see how the designer presents his finished design to the client with the use of freehand sketches, photographs, models and acetate overlays.

    ADVANCED TECHNICAL DRAWING

This program was written and presented by Stuart Arden, a design lecturer and presenter of two other titles in this subject Technical Graphics and Visual Design. Since the 1960's there has been a change in the nature of drawing. It's importance has been enhanced - it has become a visual language to explain complex ideas to the lay person and even to other technical people. This program examines the conversion of orthographic drawings to paraline and perspective drawings.
