NEBULAS AND GALAXIES PART 1

Many of the recent discoveries by the Hubble Space Telescope have been catalogued by letters and numbers. Gone are the poetic, mythical names like Milky Way or Andromeda or Pegasus. No claim of miracles, no mystical story connected to the map of stars. Yet the miraculous depths of Nebulas and Galaxies at the outermost bounds of our conceivable Universe embody the mystery of the infinite outer space. (Part I: Nebulas I and Part II: Galaxies)

PLANET EARTH PART 1

Earth's Moon was born in a catastrophic collision more than 4 billion years ago. It started out very close to the planet but has been moving away ever since. It's drifting away every year. The system's center of mass is currently inside Earth, though that is slowly changing. In a few billion years, the barycenter will eventually move outside the Earth as the Moon recedes. At that point the Moon will be promoted to planetary status. For that to happen the Earth and the Moon have to survive a host of remote catastrophe scenarios along with the predicted swelling of the Sun into a red giant in approximately five billion years, which might engulf and vaporize our civilization unless we figure out a way to relocate. (Part I and Part II)

SOLAR SYSTEM PART 1

The solar system is alive. At its heart is our Sun, offering the very molecules of its body to create the energy fueling the system. The planets are the concentrated remnants of an enormous cloud of dust and gas that had transformed into a disk, condensed at its center until finally igniting into a star. The new sun burned away its mantle of gas, just as we can see it happen today in nearby supernovae. In the early days of the sun's life, far more comets rained into the inner solar system, carrying some organic matter and water. Earth may be the only life-sustaining planet in the solar system, but there is a possibility that some moons of Jupiter and Saturn may be life-friendly as well. (Part I and Part II)

THE UNIVERSE PART 1

Over a thousand years ago, the stellar explosion known as supernova SN 1006 was observed. It was brighter than Venus, and visible during the day for weeks. The brightest supernova ever recorded on Earth, this spectacular light show was documented all around the world. Ancient observers were treated to this celestial firework display without understanding its cause. Astronomers now understand that SN 1006 was caused by a white dwarf star that captured mass from a companion star, became unstable and exploded. The explosion has left a blazing hot cloud of expanding debris. Because no material falls back into a neutron star or black hole after this type of supernova explosion, the expulsion of this star's contents is complete. Recent observations of the remnant of SN 1006 reveal the release of elements such as iron previously locked up inside the star. Is it the beginning of a process for the creation of a new world? (Part I and Part II)

PHYSICS IN ACTION: PLANETS, STARS, AND GALAXIES

Beginning with the history of astronomy (Ptolemy, Copernicus, Giordano Bruno, Galileo), this program considers the mathematics of motion (velocity, acceleration); gravity (Kepler's discoveries, Newton's laws, center of gravity, astronomical units); the properties of stars (parallax, flux, luminosity, color, Hertzsprung -Russell diagram); relativity (Einstein's theories, speed of light, space -time); and the large -scale structure of the universe (Big Bang, Cosmological Principle, Hubble's law). Humankind has come a long way in our understanding of the cosmos - but we're still only scratching the surface of astrophysics, with discoveries of incalculable value still waiting to be made.
