AMAZING WORLD OF AUTOMOBILES, THE: 02 - MOTORING MASSES

We look at the advent of the machine that has kept us on the road over the last century. Since the earliest days, motoring has not exactly been cheap. In the beginning it was only the rich who could afford wheels, but then Henry Ford changed the way the world moved. Originally the Tin Lizzy cost $850, but eight years later, with efficiencies in production, the price had dropped to $360 dollars. By 1918, over half the cars in America were Model T?s. Ford also changed the way people worked in factories, becoming the father of the moving production line.

AMAZING WORLD OF AUTOMOBILES, THE: 03 - 4-WHEEL DRIVE

In the earliest days, roads were where horses pulled carts, but as cars came along, gravel gave way to cobblestones, which in turn disappeared as the modern roads were paved with tar. Roads became more durable, but that didn?t stop the intrepid traveller who wanted to explore more inhospitable terrain. The first four wheel drive was created in Amsterdam in 1903. One of the first 4WD systems was developed for steam engines, before cars were even invented. Most vehicles of the time were put to use in the military. If necessity is the mother of invention, then warfare is its father.

After WWII, motor sport became a team affair, and drivers went professional, and were able to pick and choose which team they wanted to drive for, mush like today.

AMAZING WORLD OF AUTOMOBILES, THE: 07 - THE FUTURE

Each year, thousands more cars are introduced to our roads, filing our air with harmful pollutants and using up precious resources. In the last ten years car manufacturers have been working on ways to cut carbon emissions and save fuel at the same time - the result so far has been hybrid cars such as Toyota?s Prius and Ford?s Fiesta E-kinetic. One possible solution is the eventual replacement of unleaded petrol with more environmentally friendly and economic bio-fuels such as ethanol based petrol. But Bio-fuels aren?t the only alternative. Another idea is the use of hydrogen, which leaves only a water-based emission. The main problem scientists face with hydrogen and electrical fuel cells is the financial cost to both car manufacturer and consumer.

AMAZING WORLD OF AUTOMOBILES, THE: 08 - SAFETY FIRST

By the end of the first twenty-five years of motoring history, Britain?s road toll was in the thousands, and something had to be done to curb the terrible cost associated with the century?s newest invention. The earliest seatbelts caught on in the 1950?s, three-point belts becoming law in some countries (including the UK and Australia) due to their effectiveness in saving lives. Speed limits, air-bags and stability-control technology are some other ideas that have been beneficial for safety, although air bags have the potential to cause injury and even death in children, something car manufacturers are working on to try to eradicate.

While cars can be seen on virtually every street in every modernized country on the planet, to find the first reliable engines we would have to go back in time to Germany, where two inventors, Niklaus Otto and Karl Benz, revolutionized the way people travelled from A to B. The very first example of the machine that changed the world was the System Lutzmann Motor Carriage, manufactured in 1899 by Benz. It was a three-wheeled, selfpropelled carriage fuelled by a petrol engine. Over the next fifty years, Benz, Volkswagon and Porsche would lead the way in German engineering, creating some of the most popular and prestigious cars in the world.

SHOW ME SCIENCE ADVANCED - FUEL TECHNOLOGY: TRANSPORTATION INNOVATIONS

The automobile industry is going through revolutionary changes. The standard petroleum gasoline fueled engine has some new competition from gas-electric hybrids, electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, natural gas vehicles and even some automobiles that get some of their power from the sun. Alternative fuel vehicles produce less harmful emissions and are better for the environment. Many of these fuels can be derived from renew-able resources. Hybrid vehicles such as ones that are powered by a combination of gasoline combustion engines and electric motors are becoming more common. Other vehicles that are in development are powered by fuels such as ethanol, biodiesel, natural gas, propane, and hydrogen fuel cells.
