COGNITIVE-BEHAVIORAL THERAPY FOR LATE-LIFE DEPRESSION

With Dolores Gallagher-Thompson, PhD, ABPP Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is an effective and appropriate approach for late-life depression because it is problem focused, examining and treating present-day problems that negatively impact the client's quality of life. COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY FOR SOCIAL ANXIETY

With Amy Wenzel, PhD, ABPP In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Social Anxiety, Amy Wenzel demonstrates the execution of this system of psychotherapy, which is based on the premise that inaccurate and unhelpful ways of thinking about oneself, the world, and the future have the potential to cause, exacerbate, and maintain emotional distress. Cognitive behavioral therapy's efficacy has been demonstrated extensively in empirical studies for a wide range of clinical presentations, including depression, anxiety, anger, addictions, personality disorders, and adjustment to medical illness. In this demonstration, Dr. Wenzel works with a young woman who experiences life interference and substantial distress due to social anxiety. COGNITIVE-BEHAVIORAL THERAPY FOR SPECIFIC PHOBIAS

With Michael A. Tompkins, PhD Exposure-based cognitive-behavioral therapy is the treatment of choice for specific phobias. A phobia, or an extreme fear of a specific situation or object that results in severe distress or highly avoidant behavior around those objects or situations, can interfere with day-to-day functioning. Using cognitive restructuring strategies with graduated exposure to the feared object, the therapist helps the client to correct anxiety-evoking misappraisals and to replace them with more realistic interpretations and predictions. In this video, Dr. Tompkins works with a man with a cat phobia. The client's cat phobia has evolved over time, and he has experienced interference in his personal and professional life. Dr. Tompkins supplements exposure-based strategies with cognitive restructuring to help the client to clarify and change his phobic predictions and decrease his avoidant behavior.

CBT FOR PERSONALITY DISORDERS

By Arthur Freeman In this final installment of our comprehensive Three Approaches to Personality Disorders video series, watch renowned CBT expert Art Freeman assess cognitive schemas and set concrete therapeutic goals for Alfred, a challenging client who demonstrates significant Axis II issues and suicidal inclinations after being left by his girlfriend. Expert CBT clinician Art Freeman brings a no-nonsense yet relational style to his work with 40-year-old Alfred (played by Dutch actor Hank Grashuis), whose pain over a recent breakup reveals troubling symptoms and an underlying personality disorder. Altering his initial assessment upon inquiring into the client's dominant schemas, Freeman attends empathically to Alfred's narcissistic need to "give 100% or nothing" in his relationships while simultaneously gaining buy-in to explore ways of gaining more, not less, control over his anger, drinking, relationships, and emotions. Employing CBT interventions of supporting clients in linking thoughts, emotions, and behavior, Freeman nonetheless does so in an attuned way, even while addressing (to us in voiceover commentary) his own countertransference, and builds a trusting alliance with Alfred, who ultimately feels safe enough to commit to further therapy. By watching this video, you will: ~ Understand how a CBT therapist assesses for personality disorders and obtains commitment to therapy. ~ Learn how CBT can be integrated with psychodynamic principles such as countertransference and the therapeutic alliance. ~ Identify elements of CBT style and strategy to use with your own clients.

COGNITIVE THERAPY FOR OBSESSIONS

By Reid Wilson In these live sessions with a patient suffering from obsessive thinking, Reid Wilson demonstrates tools and techniques of cognitive therapy that clinicians can begin to apply immediately. With humor, compassion and impressive persistence, Wilson masterfully helps Rita do a 180 when it comes to how she's approaching her health anxiety. Challenging conventional wisdom about how to get better, Wilson's paradoxical approach to change is reminiscent of Buddhist teachings that talk about suffering coming from resistance. Urging her to want her symptoms as opposed to trying to get rid of them, he turns everything upside down, making for a fascinating and refreshing approach to anxiety disorders in particular and life in general. While kind and patient, Wilson is at times somewhat pushy and aggressive. On this aspect of his approach he says: "This method can be challenging to therapists who work in a less directive, more client-centered way. But these clients are really stuck in a faulty belief system. If we aren't aggressive in our tactics, then we are going to be at the work for a long time." If you're looking for a way to really make some inroads with your clients with anxiety disorders in a short period of time, this video is definitely for you. By watching this video, you will: ~ Learn the core concepts of Wilson's approach to treating anxiety disorders. ~ Understand how to conduct a highly focused assessment. ~ Identify tools for helping clients increase their tolerance of uncertainty and discomfort
