Companies and other organisations rely on logos to convey information and create brand recognition. Their design is critical - time, creativity, expertise and often, vast sums of money, are invested into their creation - but what are the principles and elements of excellent logo design?

This program explores various aspects of logo design including the various purposes for which logos are required, how they might be used and the different places they might be displayed, the logo design process and the importance of excellent communication with clients.

Expert comments come from Deakin University lecturer Dr Meghan Kelly, commercial designers Stephen Davey and Chelsea Koetsveld, and one of her clients, business owner Nick McEwan-Hall.

GRAY MATTERS

Director: Marco Orsini

The documentary Gray Matters explores the long, fascinating life of architect and designer Eileen Gray, whose uncompromising vision defined and defied the practice of modernism in decoration, design and architecture.

Making a reputation with her lacquer work in the beginning of the 20th century, Gray became a critically acclaimed and sought-after decorator and designer before reinventing herself as an architect. Her first and most famous building, a modernist villa on the French Riviera called E-1027, was for many years mistakenly credited to her mentor, Le Corbusier. For the most part, her pioneering work was done quietly, privately and to her own specifications. But she lived long enough (98 years old) to be rediscovered and acclaimed. Today, with her work commanding extraordinary prices and attention, her legacy, like its creator, remains elusive, contested, and compelling.

EXTREME BY DESIGN

Directed by Ralph King Jr. and Michael Schwarz

In a Stanford multidisciplinary, project-based course, student design teams are building a better world...one product at a time.

EXTREME BY DESIGN follows Stanford business, engineering and medical students as they work in teams, using design thinking methods, to develop products and services that serve the needs of the world's poor. One student team works on a breathing device to keep babies alive in Bangladesh. Another seeks a way to store drinking water in Indonesia. The third team project is to design an IV medicine infusion pump.

It's all part of the Design for Extreme Affordability course inspired and launched by the Stanford d.school. The film begins on the first day of the course and ends eight months later as one group of students returns to Asia to test their device amid plans to launch a startup.

At a time of unprecedented global challenges EXTREME BY DESIGN shows the power of human-centered design in creating innovative, effective and sustainable solutions to the complex problems facing us.

DESIGN IS ONE

Directos: Kathy Brew & Roberto Guerra

Italian-born Lella and Massimo Vignelli are among the world's most influential designers. Their contributions to the fields of industrial, graphic, and production design have resulted in iconic achievements in the development of corporate identity programs, home furnishing and interior design, architectural graphics, and publishing. Garnering international awards and recognition for over forty years, the Vingelli's have led the vanguard of innovative designers through their interdisciplinary mentorship. Throughout their career, their ambitious motto has been, "If you can't find it, design it."

In 1965 Massimo brought the Helvetica typeface to the United States. Igniting an interest in the Vinelli's work, this design development lead to a series of notable projects: New York's subway signage and maps; the interior of Saint Peter's Church at Citicorp Center; Venini lamps; Heller dinnerware; furniture for Poltrona Frau; and branding initiatives for Knoll International, Bloomingdales, Saks Fifth Avenue, Ford, and American Airlines.

Their work has covered such broad spectrum of industries and produced so many recognizable images that one could say the Vignellis have a distinct global identity, even though many do not recognize their names. Experts from the world of design including architects Richard Meier and Peter Eisenman, as well as graphic designers Milton Glaser, Michael Bierut, and Jessica Helfand, offer their anecdotes and memories of the Vignellis' work in Design is One. The film captures the Vingelli's intelligence and creativity, offering the audience intimate access into their everyday life and continuing work and a glimpse of their humanity, warmth and humor.
