SHOW ME SCIENCE - TECHNOLOGY: ELECTRONICS - BENEFITTING THE ENVIRONMENT

Scientists created the Eden Project, a hot and humid tropical environment, by building an enormous greenhouse made of a special plastic foil. The material is transparent, allowing for sunlight to reach the plants. With advancements in science and engineering, not only can we predict and limit the impact of environmental disasters, but we can imitate nature itself. Scientists and engineers have developed systems to monitor potential flood areas to help mitigate natural disasters. Areas along rivers that have a propensity to flood are equipped with systems that include key elements: inputs, processing, outputs, and feedback. Inputs are the means by which the system gathers information. Eight hundred and fifty outstations along the river are equipped with sensors that record the height of the river and rain gauges to keep track of rising waters. If it rises too fast, there is a warning system to people nearby; otherwise it can usually be controlled by a series of dams or sluice gates. Local weather forecasts are part of the processing. These factors combined create a system that has eliminated dangerous floods by controlling the river at different points through electronics.

Land line telephones send sound waves that are converted into electrical impulses that work with a series of switches and routing devices that open an electrical pathway to whomever you're calling. More commonly, cell phones operate by means of a modulated electromagnetic wave basically a radio. These signals connect to an electronic communications network. Metropolitan areas are divided into small networks where antennas send and receive signals depending on the user's location.

This program shows how we are utilizing electronics to understand environmental conditions and help to avoid disaster. As more biomes across the planet experience extremes in weather and as more natural disasters such as hurricanes and tsunamis affect densely populated areas, this technology will increase in importance.

Peer inside any electronic device and you will see at the heart of that device, a printed circuit board. These boards which used to connect just enough capacitors and resistors to run a simple transistor radio are now used to run all of our electronic devices. New technology has shrunk the size of all of the components that attach to the board, the width of the wires that connect them and even the size of the circuit board itself. Without the printed circuit board, our world would look a lot different.

This program details the processes involved in planning, designing, and building printed circuit boards. The process begins when a design is created in computer-aided design software. Students will learn what materials are used to construct the boards as well as how the circuits are planned and built into the boards.
