EVOLUTION EXPLAINED

Three videos, Charles Darwin Explains the Diversity of Life, The Story of Evolution and The Origin of Species: Creationism and Evolution

Charles Darwin Explains the Diversity of Life.
Come with us to Charles Darwin's home in Down, England; to the South American rainforest; and to the Galapagos Islands to learn how Darwin laid the foundation for modern biology with the revolutionary theory of evolution by natural selection.

The Story of Evolution
Explains how life has changed through the ages and how the modern theory of evolution by natural selection shows how these changes have come about. Includes new work on dinosaur extinction.

The Origin of Species: Creationism and Evolution
When Charles Darwin visited the Amazonian rainforest and the Galapagos Islands in 1835 he, along with most of the scientific community of his day, believed in creationism. Come with us to these same sites today to see why he and scientists following him abandoned this theory and replaced it with the theory of evolution by natural selection.

This program explains clearly and convincingly just why creationism was rejected. It also explains the differences between fact and theory in science and explains some lively differences about evolution theory among scientists today.

IS EVOLUTION PROGRESSIVE?

By Richard Dawkins

In setting out to answer his central question "Is Evolution Progressive?", Dawkins illustrates the human biases that continue to muddle our understanding of just what evolutionary 'progress' means; from early Victorian influences, to contemporary scientific texts which uncritically invoke 'evolutionary scales' and notions of 'higher' and 'lower' organisms. In turn, Dawkins demonstrates the 'human chauvinistic' definition of progress, and why, if progress is defined from this point of view, it becomes easy to deny any progressive elements to evolution. In response, Dawkins argues that if we use a more biologically sensible definition of progress, evolution can indeed be shown to be progressive in a very important sense.

DARWIN'S REVOLUTION IN THOUGHT: AN ILLUSTRATED LECTURE FOR THE CLASSROOM

By Stephen Jay Gould

Using evolutionary biology, history of science, and social history as his canvas, Gould paints the fascinating picture of how human biases (philosophical, cultural, and spiritual) have continued to resist Darwin's theory, inverting it into its own philosophical opposite. "If there's one thing we desperately want evolution to be, it's a principle that predicts progressíKbut it just isn't so."-- Stephen Jay Gould

Stephen Jay Gould presents his definitive treatise on Charles Darwin's unique and radical contribution to evolutionary biology- and why it has been so poorly understood. Filmed before a live audience, this program has been used in colleges, universities, and schools across the US and abroad.

DARWIN'S DANGEROUS IDEA

By Daniel Dennelt

A single great idea: The Theory of Natural Selection. With it, Charles Darwin shattered existing notions of the natural world by demonstrating how complexity could arise as a result of a blind and mechanistic sorting process, without an "intelligent designer". Now, join Daniel Dennett as he illuminates the radical nature of Darwin's Dangerous Idea.

Setting his stage, Dennett illustrates why skeptics insist that beyond "gradual change" evolution must require something supernatural to do the "heavy lifting" of design--miraculous "lifters" which Dennett calls "skyhooks".

Instead, Dennett demonstrates that we don't need miracles or "skyhooks" because evolution gives us "cranes": From sexual reproduction, to multi-cellularity, to language, he illustrates how cranes are new designs which themselves have evolutionary explanations and which, once they exist, become the tools to create previously impossible designs -from birds and humans, to ideas and culture.

Next, Dennett turns to the "memetic revolution", and proposes how memes (the cultural analog of genes) can explain the extraordinary phenomenon of human culture. In surprising fashion, he cites Toxoplasma Gondi and brain fluke parasites (which cause suicidal behavior in their hosts) to suggest why we don't need "skyhooks" to account for uniquely human attributes. He demonstrates how morality, ethics, the appreciation of beauty, or the willingness to die for an ideology are ideas (memes) which have, like parasites hijacking the human brain, superceded the strict imperative of reproductive success.

Daniel Dennett's provocative, and highly entertaining presentation will inspire your students think about the natural world and the nature of human beings in surprising new ways.
