JEAN-PAUL GAULTIER AT WORK

What if we watched Jean Paul Gaultier at work giving the definitive master class on what constitutes the essence of his work?

Jean Paul Gaultier's work is making clothes, not putting on fashion shows, producing perfume, talking to the media or presenting programs on MTV. But making clothes. He sketches them, of course, but more importantly, he creates them by draping them, constructing them around the body of the fitting model.

12 of Jean Paul Gaultier's most iconic creations are re-created directly onto a fitting model, in front of the camera, in understated, white surroundings. 10 women's outfits and 2 men's outfits.

In Haute Couture, the "toile" is the first stage, carried out using untreated, beige linen, which enables appraisal of the style. Like a first draft, the moment during which everything can still be changed, before the creation takes on its final shape. Jean Paul Gaultier at work can be viewed as a sequence shot, in which the garments materialize before our eyes, revealing how his thought process develops between ideas and material. Gaultier's oeuvre, recounted by himself, in the first person - like a lasting legacy of creativity.

LEGACY OF ALEXANDER MCQUEEN, THE

In an attempt to understand a genius like Alexander McQueen, Loic Prigent retraces the breathtaking career of the English fashion designer, whose life was abruptly cut short by his suicide in February 2010. The doc explores his 3 last fashion shows and reveals the extraordinary creative process that went into them.

A year before he died, the highly controversial Alexander McQueen presented a collection that revisited all the codes of an oeuvre that began in the 1990s. Morbid and excessive, he ridiculed fashion, and would crush and throw everything out, in order to start all over again, better. Six months later, he presented what critics hailed as a visionary masterpiece: Plato's Atlantis. His previous collection had spoken of a planet invaded by waste; this new collection evoked an amphibian world, in which faces and bodies had mutated. From the cut of the clothes to the wild shoes, everything was new. Finally, on 18 January 2010, 3 weeks before he committed suicide, he put on his last fashion show The Bone Collector. With a catacomb backdrop, men were covered in shinbones, skulls and ropes. It was a premonitory show.

This enlightened and inspired documentary features remarkable images of McQueen's many fashion shows - dances of death and political commentary shot through with multiple references - as well as previously unseen archive footage, offering a fascinating insight into the designer's career and personality. His work is now collected, and celebrated in sell-out exhibitions. It provides the keys to understanding why he left us.

JEANS - A FADED BLUE PLANET

From humble beginnings as durable clothing for workers in the mining towns of the Wild West, jeans have evolved into a cultural icon. The attire of a cowboy, a hero, a rock star and an ex-convict, jeans have played a part in antiestablishment movements and mainstream fashion alike. Changes in rivet, stitch and pocket placement trace the history of jeans that collectors treasure and pay for handsomely. Traditional dyeing techniques and hand-made denim live on in a few workshops, primarily in Japan, dedicated to maintaining the highest quality of fabric and control of every step in the process of making tailored jeans. On the other end of the spectrum, even the fading of jeans to give them a worn look is done on an industrial scale. Through interviews with fashion designers, jean tailors, historians and aficionados, Jeans traces the dissemination of denim and its cultural myths from America to the rest of the world and the formation of a global industry. All in a quest to find the reason why jeans have been so successful.

SAVAGE LIFE IN FASHION, A

Percy Savage is a maverick. He has led an amazing life in and around the world of designer fashion and influenced the way the industry developed. A Savage Life In Fashion combines and explores the memories he has; the people he knows; the history made to reveal an intimate world of creative expression, societal change, personal failure, collective triumph and the history of an art synonymous with opulence, luxury and refinement.

A Savage Life in Fashion is about a man whose influence was everywhere but is unknown outside the industry. Raised in the Australian outback, Percy arrived in Paris in 1947; the year Christian Dior launched his New Look. He would later become a friend of the man who revived the glory of couture and inadvertently, provide the name for the most famous of Dior fragrances: Eau Sauvage. It was at the House of Lanvin that Percy was asked to start the first Propaganda department, as it was then called, eventually renaming it PR. During his years in Paris, Percy weaved himself into the Parisian fabric and counted among friends, Dior, Beaton, Cocteau and Maria Callas. Whilst in Paris he travelled the globe, promoting and exhorting designers, journalists, buyers and manufacturers. He introduced Yves Saint-Laurent to Dior and created the explosion that was Mary Quant. He was PR for Nina Ricci during its heyday before moving to England in the 1970s. Percy had been asked by the powers-that-be to put London on a par with Paris, which he did, albeit at his own expense.

A Savage Life in Fashion opens amidst the refined excitement of the Christian Dior 2004 Spring/Summer couture show. Placing Percy within the contemporaneous reality of haute couture is made all the more pertinent as the film looks back at a post-war, history of fashion, in particular Percy's career in Paris and the foundation of fashion as we recognise it today. This retrospection provides an insight into what makes fashion perennially fascinating and forever reflective, both positively and negatively, of whom, what and why we are.

A Savage Life in Fashion includes an array of stunning IMX and Super 8 footage, exclusive archive film and photography. The film is narrated by Joanna Lumley and features interviews with Mary Quant, Hubert de Givenchy and Yuki as well as other eminent designers, journalists, historians and executives, exploring the fundamental dynamics of a much-vaunted aesthetic. Ultimately, it is a story about a man who did as he pleased, to please those in a world transfixed by image, beauty and style.
