Group Therapy

SYSTEMS OF PSYCHOTHERAPY: ATTACHMENT IN GROUP THERAPY - FACILITATING THE GROUP CLIMATE

With Cheri L. Marmarosh, PhD

In group therapy, individuals immediately rely on their prior attachment experiences to understand group processes and cope with the feelings the group elicits. Internal representations of self and others, as well as emotion-regulating strategies, are all automatically triggered in the group.

To help clients work effectively with these automatic thoughts and feelings the group leader tries to create a safe environment where individuals can explore these implicit attachment-based processes as they are activated. Regardless of the issues group members present with, the format of the group, or the theory supporting the group interventions, leading a group is often challenging because there are many internal and interpersonal dynamics influencing the process at any one point in time.

In this video, Dr. Cheri L. Marmarosh conducts a brief pre-session screening with an individual client, then shows how she applies attachment theory in the group's first interaction, demonstrating how individuals with different attachment histories may navigate their initial experience in a group.

GROUP DYNAMICS IN A MULTICULTURAL WORLD

By Mary McRae

We live in an increasingly multicultural world. When we interact with people from racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds different from our own, tension and stress sometimes arise, especially when we are not accustomed to interacting with those outside our social identity group. Our values, beliefs, and hidden assumptions can lead to discomfort and confrontation in group settings. This can have the effect of the 'fight or flight' response in participants.

This video will develop awareness and understanding of the racial , ethnic, and cultural dynamics that occur in groups and organizations. This video will instruct viewers in acknowledging rather than ignoring those differences and tensions, and will instruct viewers in discussing those differences openly and constructively.

CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS: COGNITIVE-BEHAVIORAL GROUP PLAY INTERVENTIONS

With Linda A. Reddy, PhD

In this video, Dr. Linda A. Reddy demonstrates evidence-based approaches to implementing cognitive-behavioral group play interventions with children who are 4-10 years old. Often times, children with neurocognitive and behavioral issues such as ADHD, have trouble interacting with other children and adults.

The cognitive-behavioral approach shown here uses group play interventions to help children develop prosocial skills such as sharing, asking for and offering help. Dr. Reddy's group-play interventions include a multimodal approach that integrates cognitive-behavioral interventions and skill-intensive opportunities for learning through teaching modalities, as well as structured group therapy interventions.

In this video, Dr. Reddy demonstrates cognitive-behavioral group play interventions with four elementary-aged school children through several exercises in developmentally appropriate games.

PROMISE OF GROUP THERAPY, THE: THE BEGINNING PHASES

By Vivian Nelson, Bill Roller

THIS THREE-PART SERIES presents scenes from a spontaneous, unscripted group that met for ten sessions with individuals willing to reveal themselves before a live camera.

The six-hour series introduces a unique way to conceptualize small group process. As the group evolves, the videos demonstrate the phases of group therapy development and emergent leadership roles articulated by Ariadne P. Beck, founder of the Chicago Group Development Research Team and preeminent researcher in the field of group dynamics.

Throughout the series provide concise (and, we hope, incisive) commentary on the group, so that the viewer learns how object relations can be applied to the group therapy setting. The work of other systems theorists is also introduced, providing a practical method to contain conflict and intense affect by the skillful use of subgroups.

Such basic concepts as projective identification, dissociation, part-object transference, and countertransference are clearly illustrated. In our commentary we try to elaborate the meaning of the group structure and demonstrate how it maybe used to facilitate the growth of each member.

ENCOUNTER GROUPS FOR ADDICTIONS VOLUME I: EVOLUTION OF THE ENCOUNTER GROUP

With Rod Mullen

Mullen explores the evolution of encounter groups beginning with the first groups created by Synanon founder Chuck Dederich in the 1950s. Mullen discusses the essential elements of these first groups including honesty, authenticity and mutual self-help - elements that are still core to encounter groups today. He highlights that although the brutal confrontational style of the first groups have softened, the commitment to hold oneself and other accountable remains central. He also discusses the challenges that face encounter groups and offers guidance on how to work within managed care systems while holding on to the traditions that make encounter groups such an effective means for change.

From watching this program, you'll be able to:
  • Describe the most integral aspects of encounter groups that have remained relevant from the 1950s to the present.
  • Discuss the early history of encounter groups and how they came about.
  • Explain how encounter groups have changed over time, and how changes in the field during the last 20 years have posed significant challenges to running effective encounter groups.

ENCOUNTER GROUPS FOR ADDICTIONS VOLUME II: PITFALLS & SOLUTIONS

    With Rod Mullen

Mullen walks us through several groups to show us what works and what does not work when facilitating an encounter group. He warns us of several traps facilitators can fall into: dominating the group, getting into power struggles, not being prepared or knowing the group members, and leading groups that are too large and don't go deep enough. Through numerous vignettes, he illustrates solutions to these common problems, and offers words of experience and wisdom to the encounter group facilitator: know your people, be prepared, get feedback, and listen, listen, listen!

From watching this program, you'll be able to:
  • Implement strategies for breaking the we/they dichotomy between staff and group members.
  • Explain why it is important for a facilitator to know the members of his or her group and what the dangers are if they don't.
  • Compare the differences between large and small groups, the effectiveness of both, and ways to make them each work.

ENCOUNTER GROUPS FOR ADDICTIONS VOLUME III: KEYS TO FOSTERING GROWTH

    With Rod Mullen

Mullen discusses several key components to fostering growth and change in groups. He first explores the "marathon group" and how these day or weeklong sessions can bring participants into deeper understanding of themselves and what they need to change. He then discusses the importance of moral growth and ways in which facilitators can lead groups that foster moral growth by providing credible role models, healthy levels of conflict, role-reversal, and the teaching of responsibility. Finally, Mullen discusses the prevalence of PTSD among addicts and how encounter groups offer opportunities to heal from childhood abuse.

From watching this program, you'll be able to discuss:
  • Describe ways marathon groups differ from regular encounter groups, the importance of them for group members, and different possibilities for doing them today.
  • Discuss the conditions a facilitator must create to foster moral growth within group members.
  • Explain how PTSD increases a person's risk for abusing drugs, and how trauma can be worked through in encounter groups.

GROUP DYNAMICS AND THE NEW HEROISM: THE ETHICAL ALTERNATIVE TO THE STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT

By Phil Zimbardo and Bill Roller

GROUP DYNAMICS AND THE NEW HEROISM is a six hour video series which captures the unscripted, spontaneous group process of eight individuals as they learn how to work together and form groups that will help motivate and sustain the courageous actions they wish to pursue.

Our film tracks them as they obey their conscience and act in concert with each other. The viewer can follow the steps of the group as they organize themselves to act courageously and nonviolently for an ethical cause - then see them carry their project to fulfillment. We supply commentaries to help viewers follow the progress of the group.

Scapegoating was the primary dynamic in the Stanford Prison Experiment. But scapegoating is not the only way to create drama in a narrative. We present a dramatic story that is fresh and new - of people who resist scapegoating in all its guises, challenge unjust authority, and act in the public interest.

Our film series will help people practice civil obedience to universal values enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the laws of the United States. It will guide viewers to act with respect for humanity, resist scapegoating of those who appear different, and activate the creative energy of nonconformity.

This film series is essential viewing for organizations dedicated to peace and justice who want to put their political and social thought to work in real life situations. College and university departments of social psychology, sociology, psychology, political science, anthropology, and other human sciences will find the format useful in creating classes that challenge and inspire students.

LEADING COUNSELING GROUPS WITH ADULTS: A DEMONSTRATION OF THE ART OF ENGAGEMENT

By Ed Jacobs, PhD & Christine Schimmel, EdD

How do group therapists deepen engagement while keeping things moving? In this video, watch two experienced co-leaders demonstrate core techniques for successful group therapy with adults.

Successful group therapy requires clinicians to contend with simultaneous moving parts. At its best, a therapy group presents ample opportunities for members' self-reflection, meaningful interaction, insight, and growth - and group leaders must be skilled in creating the conditions for this. Given the plethora of approaches to this type of work, therapists can benefit from solid primers. This video offers just that, a comprehensive overview of the core skills and techniques of leading therapy groups with adults.

Here, Drs. Ed Jacobs and Christine Schimmel demonstrate a wide range of group therapy essentials with a gathering of eight women. For the purposes of producing a training video, these sessions all took place in one day, creating a condensed but nonetheless realistic microcosm of the experience of ongoing group therapy. Divorce, addiction, anxiety, and parenting are addressed and explored collaboratively, as the women support each other through reflection, crosstalk, and role-play activities.

Skills and techniques covered include asking good, deepening questions; using rounds to engage members; drawing out; holding, deepening and shifting focus; teaching concepts and ideas; use of props and chairs; and much more. With plenty of useful tips shown in a real group, this is an invaluable resource for any clinician who conducts group therapy.

By watching this video, you will:
  • Understand the arc of a successful therapy group, including its distinct phases.
  • Learn techniques to establish group rapport, deepen the therapy, and keep members engaged.
  • Identify the necessary skills for facilitating crosstalk, focusing on members' needs, and linking common issues.

    LEADING GROUPS WITH ADOLESCENTS

By Janice DeLucia-Waack, PhD & Allen Segrist, PhD

In this comprehensive DVD featuring a live, unscripted group with actual high school students, two expert group therapists share their extensive knowledge, making this video a must-see for those new to leading groups as well as for experienced group therapists looking to refine their skills.

One highlight of this video is that it walks the viewer through each stage of a group, giving you a comprehensive understanding of what to do from beginning to end. Beginning with the initial session, you will learn activities to help adolescents get to know each other and become more comfortable in the group, as well as how to talk about ground rules for safety and goal setting.

Then comes the middle stage of the group, in which the focus shifts to skill development and the learning of new behaviors. Here the group explores how thoughts influence feelings, as well as assertiveness skills and incorporating resilience. Finally, learn how to facilitate the termination of a group, which many group therapists would argue is the most important stage. Watch as the group explores what they have learned and how they have helped each other, as they say goodbye and reflect on their time together.

Another bonus to this video is the time the co-leaders and moderator spend reflecting on the group and processing what occurs. This gives the viewer a great degree of insight into the thinking processes of the co-leaders and why they chose specific activities and interventions. The video ends with a lively and candid discussion among the co-leaders and the moderator, in which the group members participate and add their input on how the group was for them.

By watching this video, you will:
  • Learn how to create a therapeutic environment for adolescents that is fun and engaging as well as safe and structured.
  • Discover techniques that help teens tap into their inner strength and resilience.
  • Understand how to facilitate activities and discussions that foster self-discovery and interpersonal learning.
