LEARNING TO HEAR

Director: Lori Kuffner

Most people assume that it is children and young teenagers who are the beneficiaries of the cochlear implant in alleviating deafness. It is less well known that adults can also benefit from this life changing operation

This touching film explores the challenges and triumphs of two women. Aged 36 and 44, who regained their hearing after undergoing this dramatic procedure. Janice Todd Wellington lost her hearing in early childhood and spent most of her life compensating for the almost complete loss of this critical sense. Melanie Broom, a married mother of two, is about to receive an implant. With only 30% hearing in one ear, she has been constantly struggling to live normally in this hearing society.

This film enables the viewer to comprehend the world of the hearing- impaired. We watch as the operation is performed and rejoice as they regain their hearing. These two courageous women are enthralled with their new found skill, as they not only hear the voices of their loved ones, but also such everyday sounds as doors closing, birds singing, even the sound of a carrot being cut for a salad. Their days of isolation are over.

Review
  • "Recommended. Viewers of the film learn of their evaluation process of the cochlear implant procedures, follow them through the surgery and the miracle moments when their speech programming process eventually commences." - Gerald Notaro, Librarian, University of South Florida for EMRO

SOUND INSIGHT: BREAKING THE SOUND BARRIER IN A DEAF WORLD

Sue Thomas became deaf at eighteen months old. She grew up being ridiculed at a time when the world had little to offer those who suffered hearing. Sue however survived because she learned sign language, and became a master at lip reading. She became so adept at reading lips that as an adult, the FBI recognized her skill and used her talents in undercover investigations. Today, she's both the inspiration for, and name behind a weekly television series on the Pax Network. And while her world is silent, her life speaks volumes on how our weaknesses can be our greatest strength.

    CAUSES OF HEARING LOSS

This program focuses on the millions of Americans who suffer from hearing loss and examines two important causes: exposure to loud noises and ear infections. Loud noise exposure is a troubling current trend because so many teenagers and young adults frequent rock concerts or listen to music at high volume levels. Such loud noise can destroy the thousands of irreplaceable hearing cells in the inner ear. The only remedy once these cells have been destroyed is a hearing aid. Ear infections are another cause of hearing loss. The program examines how ear infections can develop and the variety of treatments available, from antibiotics to the surgical implantation of tubes.

    SIGNING AND LANGUAGE

Scientists have only recently begun to show interest in signing as language; the common assumption was simply that sign language was a kind of substitute for the spoken word, using the hands to form letters and words. But now linguists have come to realize the range of sign language, both structurally and grammatically, and to understand that sign language offers all the possibilities of spoken language: rich vocabulary, rhetorical expression, metaphor, word -play, puns, and poetry are all within the grasp of the Deaf and hard -of -hearing who use sign language for everyday communication.
