I DREAM OF WIRES

Director: Robert Fantinatto and Jason Amm

I Dream of Wires is a documentary about the rise, fall and rebirth of the machine that shaped electronic music: the modular synthesizer. The film explores the synthesizer's remarkable history, revealing how innovators like Robert Moog, working at Columbia University's Computer Music Center, helped built the foundation for the machine. It shows how cheap foreign imports destroyed the synthesizer's reputation. And it tracks the phenomenal resurgence of high end modular synthesizers being used by a new generation of musicians, many of them the progenitors of the electronic dance music genre.

Inventors, musicians and enthusiasts are interviewed about their relationship with the modular synthesizer - for many, it's an all-consuming passion. Established musicians such as Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), Gary Numan, Morton Subotnick, Carl Craig and John Foxx show off their systems and explain why they opt to use this volatile but ultimately rewarding technology.

Meanwhile, a new generation of dance and electronica artists including Clark, James Holden and Factory Floor explain why they've embraced the sound and physicality of modular synthesizers. Innovative companies like Modcan and Doepfer, driven by a desire to revive modular synthesizers, discuss how they planted the seeds that have grown into a major cottage industry. What started out as a "vintage-revival scene" in the '90s has evolved into an underground phenomena, with users and aficionados craving ever more wild and innovative sounds and interfaces.

Today, the modular synthesizer is no longer an esoteric curiosity or even a mere music instrument - it is an essential tool for radical new sounds and a bona-fide subculture.

CLASSICAL MUSIC PART 1: VIVALDI - THE FOUR SEASONS

THE FOUR SEASONS are concerti for solo violins and ensemble. SPRING has violins singing like birds1 doing rapid runs to suggest streaks of lightning, and the low strings rumbling like thunden SUMMER includes a storm; the solo violin represents a cuckoo, a turtledove, a goldfmch, and a weeping shepherd. There are loud tremolo passages to suggest thunder. AUTUMN is a picture of harvest-the joys of reaping, the weariness of the peasants, the vigor of a hunting scene. WINTER utilizes the strings to suggest shivering, teeth chattering, feet stomping for warmth. As well as snow, ice, and the winds there is the comfort of the fireplace.

COUPLETS OF THE TOREADOR is the prelude to the opera. It opens as a lively work full of vigor before becoming more tranquil. CLASSICAL MUSIC PART 3: MOZART

The opening movement of Mozarts beloved A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC is march-like in nature. It is light and charming like the DIVERTIMENTI, pleasant works designed to entertain. The RONDO ALLA TURCA was originally the last movement of a piano sonata; it is an airy tune in the style that Mozarts Vienna liked to refer to as Turkish. The V SONATA IN C is here performed by flute with string accompaniment. The Rondo from A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC repeats its opening phrase on many different steps of the scale, and bounces along to a vibrant conclusion. The EXSULTATE is the finale of Mozarts 1773 cantata, where its bright hue makes it a perfect contrast with all the expressive music that precedes it; it is marked to be played presto.

FUR ELISE (Ludwig van Beethoven 1770-1827) is Beethovens most famous bagatelle; it may have been written for a lady with whom he was in love, but could not marry.

THE CUCKOO - (Claude Daquin 1694-1772) was probably originally a harpsichord piece. THE SWAN - (CamilIe Saint Saens 1835-1921) comes from a collection of works for piano and orchestra entitled Carnival of the Animals; it was originally a cello solo.

YO-YO MA: INSPIRED BY BACH - THE SOUND OF THE CARCERI

Yo-Yo Ma with Piranesi

Yo- Yo Ma performs Bach in a virtual prison designed by Piranesi.

THE SOUND OF THE CARCERI explores the deep relationship between music and architecture through a high-tech "virtual confrontation" between Bach and his contemporary, the architect Giovanni Battista Piranesi. Using a striking visual style, director Francois Girard ("The Red Violin" and "Thirty- Two Short Films about Glenn Gould") places Yo- Yo Ma within a series of computer-generated, three-dimensional recreations of Piranesi's well-known prison etchings.

Through Yo- Yo Ma's and music producer Steven Epstein's struggle to recreate and interact with the imaginary space that Ma performs in, the film examines the complexity of illusion, of representation and reality.
