CELL-TO-CELL COMMUNICATION: ORAL HEALTH AND GENERAL HEALTH

Edited by: S. Jepsen, M. Sanz, B. Stadlinger, H. Terheyden

The Links Between Periodontitis, Atherosclerosis, and Diabetes

Can periodontitis or other inflammatory processes of the oral cavity contribute to systemic conditions such as atherosclerosis or diabetes, or negatively influence their course?

This 3D animation Oral Health and General Health - addresses these issues by visualizing the highly complex intercellular interactions and signaling pathways. Periodontal pathogens are invasive and can spread throughout the body via the bloodstream. Locally produced pro-inflammatory mediators can also shed into the circulation. This new film features an interdisciplinary topic, and in this context, special attention is given to diseases such as atherosclerosis and type 2 diabetes.

  • Dissemination of bacteria in periodontitis
  • Impact of periodontitis on the cardiovascular system: Atherosclerosis
  • Effect of periodontitis on glucose metabolism: Type 2 diabetes
  • Dental treatment

    CELL-TO-CELL COMMUNICATION: PERIODONTAL REGENERATION

Edited by: Bernd Stadlinger, Henfrik Terheyden

Unlike bone, which undergoes remodeling by resorption followed by bone apposition, teeth are not subject to physiological remodeling. They are remarkably resistant to physiological remodeling processes. The reason for this is found in the periodontium and cementum. The mechanisms that take effect in this area and the effectiveness of the periodontal system - consisting of gingiva, alveolar bone, periodontium and cementum - after injuries will be visualized in the new scientific 3D film, "Periodontal Regeneration".The visualization of these complex processes is of great interest for academic teaching as well as for the clinician and general practitioner as the cellular interactions are presented in the context of four phases. For the first time scanning electron microscopic images of real cells will be visualized allowing the comparison of their characteristics with computer animated simulations.

    TEETH

    By Alice Arnold

The vital importance of an attractive smile, accented by gleaming white teeth, is repeatedly emphasized in all forms of contemporary consumer culture. This film is an amusing but informative look at the psychological, social and economic issues involved in our concerns about dental hygiene, and how the marketplace perpetuates and exploits these anxieties.

Featuring interviews with people having admittedly less-than-perfect smiles-with yellow, crooked, missing teeth or gaps-plus commentary by dentists, a psychoanalyst and a health educator, TEETH examines historical and cultural attitudes to teeth, society's current notions of beauty, and the recent boom in teeth-whitening products and cosmetic dentistry.

While discussing how economic inequalities, including the lack of universal dental healthcare insurance, affect Americans' oral health, TEETH also examines hip-hop culture's fashion of sporting gold or diamond-plated "grills" in the mouth as just the latest example of the connections between consumer culture, commercial images, self-identity and personal expression.

DYNAMICS OF ORTHODONTICS - VOL 3A/3B: NORMAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE DENTITION / MALOCCLUSIONS AND INTERCEPTIONS

Edited by: William R. Proffit, Frans P. G. M. van der Linden, James A. McNamara

Three-dimensional views provide insight revealing the factors that affect the way the dentition develops in the growing face and the role that function plays in that process. The relationship of the developing dentition to jaw size and jaw growth and associated variations in the development of the dentition are elucidated. This volume also describes both the primary factor and the associated deviations that develop in each type of malocclusion, providing a basis for efficient treatment approaches. Emphasis is placed on deviating development that can be interrupted by interception procedures, leading to spontaneous corrections and favourable conditions for initiating orthodontic treatment.
