TIME AND MONEY

They say 'time is money', and nowhere is this truer than in the fast-paced world of modern product design, where success and obsolescence can be separated by just a few weeks or months. This innovative and visually sophisticated program explores the important factors of time and money in the design and marketing of a product. Case studies of an innovative wall mount for Apple iPad and a go kart sticker manufacturer highlight the costs of the design process, including productivity and efficiency, and time management. Then we see how manufacturing, distribution, and pricing strategies all impact on the design process.

SUSTAINABLE FOOD PRODUCT DESIGN

Sustainable product design is the major focus of food producers across the world, as we head towards the limit of the amount of food we can produce with no slowing of our population. In this program we get to meet the producers who are dedicated to providing the best for consumers and the environment both now and in the future. This film takes students on a journey looking at each stage of the design process, identifying some of the key elements that have to be considered when looking at sustainable product design. The program also features examples of completed controlled assessment projects which demonstrate an understanding of a number of sustainability issues.

DESIGNING FOR THE USER: INCLUSIVE DESIGN FOR GRAPHICS & RESISTANT MATERIALS

Learn how to create products that meet user need and are inclusive. Designers explain how they: research their market; consider the values and needs of their users and work with ergonomic and anthropometric data. The resource also explores how designers are responding to the challenges of demographic change and inclusive design. It provides examples relevant for resistant materials, product design and graphics courses.

SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING

This DVD explores what the food industry is doing to use less packaging. First it looks at the role and function of packaging. It then looks at the challenges of designing reduced packaging that not only looks good, but gets the product to the shelves in one piece. We also see how plastic bottles are recycled into new food grade plastic, before being formed into salad containers. An ideal resource for students studying Food Technology, Graphic Design, Resistant Materials, Product Design, Sustainability and Citizenship.

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN AND TESTING: DESIGNING FOR INNOVATION AND SAFETY

A fantastic way to bring real and relevant industrial design into the classroom illustrating some of the considerations designers have to take into account. Footage of physical and virtual tests, filmed at Volvo's crash testing facility, will provide an excellent starting point for students when testing, evaluating and modifying their own designs. It also reinforces how engineers work collaboratively with designers to ensure that new technologies are harnessed with aesthetics.

PRODUCT DESIGN, TESTING AND MODIFICATION: TRUNKI

Designing products that meet rigorous safety standards is an increasingly important skill - especially when it comes to products used by children. Trunki, the child's pull along suitcase, may have failed the BBC Dragon's Den test, but thanks to further testing and modification it's now taking the world by storm. We film with the product designer and at one of the world's leading test centres, to find out about the different tests carried out on children's products, why calibrating equipment is so important and how clever design reduced costs and time to market. Includes footage of rotational and injection moulding and mechanical and physical tests

LEAN PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

Firms that can develop better products faster consistently see increased profits and growing market share. To achieve this goal, Toyota and other global leaders have adopted the same lean improvement philosophy in new product development that has revolutionized the manufacturing world. Lean product development has become the new frontier in corporate improvement, enabling increased agility, better use of precious resources, and enhanced organizational learning.

The Lean Product Development program is an excellent way to get started on your journey to dramatic reductions in time-to-market and greater value-creation for your customers. Michael Kennedy and Ron Mascitelli, both thought leaders in the rapidly growing field of lean product development, share their unique but synergistic approaches to lean product development implementation, along with experienced-based tips on how to avoid pitfalls and ensure success. The practical real-world experience of both Teledyne Benthos and Carleton Life Support reinforces the benefits, and will help guide your own deployment strategy. The message of this valuable video is that lean product development is critical to your long-term success, and should be your firm's next initiative in your journey toward a truly lean enterprise.

DESIGN FOR MANUFACTURE AND ASSEMBLY

This program features an interview with Nicholas Dewhurst of Boothroyd Dewhurst regarding the concepts and use of DFMA in product analysis to understand the drivers of cost, and the interaction of the individual pieces within the product to optimize design, manufacturability, and assembly.

Two companies successful use of DFMA are also highlighted, including: MDS-SCIEX, a scientific instrumentation manufacturer, where implementation of DFMA philosophies helped reduce the product development design cycle for their API 2000 mass spectrometer from 48 months to 16 months; and Plug Power, a fuel cell manufacturer, where the integral use of DFMA facilitated development of their Proton Exchange membrane fuel cell systems at the lowest cost.

DFM - DESIGN FOR MANUFACTURING

At Storage Technology, a new assembly using DFM that costs 86% less, reduced part count from 119 to 36.

DFM applied to large hydraulic cylinders at Caterpillar, Inc. produced significant cost reduction.

Then, at Xerox, DFM was used to re-design a paper feed guide to go from five parts plus hardware to one part and snap fits.

Standardized components at IBM help expedite product development by offering the designers many necessary pre-designed "building blocks."
