DESIGNING FOR THE USER: INCLUSIVE DESIGN FOR GRAPHICS & RESISTANT MATERIALS

Learn how to create products that meet user need and are inclusive. Designers explain how they: research their market; consider the values and needs of their users and work with ergonomic and anthropometric data. The resource also explores how designers are responding to the challenges of demographic change and inclusive design. It provides examples relevant for resistant materials, product design and graphics courses.

SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING

This DVD explores what the food industry is doing to use less packaging. First it looks at the role and function of packaging. It then looks at the challenges of designing reduced packaging that not only looks good, but gets the product to the shelves in one piece. We also see how plastic bottles are recycled into new food grade plastic, before being formed into salad containers. An ideal resource for students studying Food Technology, Graphic Design, Resistant Materials, Product Design, Sustainability and Citizenship.

CHOOSING SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS

This programme gets students thinking about the 6Rs and what makes a material sustainable, including its carbon footprint, whether it's sourced from renewable or recycled materials and what happens at "end of life". Materials discussed include: wood, plastic and textiles. Also, we look round the UK's first zero carbon housing project and visit the Smile Plastics factory where anything from mobile phones to children's wellingtons are turned into building materials.

DESIGNING WITH RECYCLED MATERIALS

This resource looks at why and how specific plastics are recycled, regenerated and tested to fulfil the required characteristics for modern sustainable products. Includes: a chair made from Sony Playstations and washing machines that use parts made from recycled fridge plastic. The DVD also shows how new technology is used to process and convert waste products into high-grade polymers. We then see these plastics undergo destructive and non-destructive tests to identify their properties and characteristics.

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN AND TESTING: DESIGNING FOR INNOVATION AND SAFETY

A fantastic way to bring real and relevant industrial design into the classroom illustrating some of the considerations designers have to take into account. Footage of physical and virtual tests, filmed at Volvo's crash testing facility, will provide an excellent starting point for students when testing, evaluating and modifying their own designs. It also reinforces how engineers work collaboratively with designers to ensure that new technologies are harnessed with aesthetics.

PRODUCT DESIGN, TESTING AND MODIFICATION: TRUNKI

Designing products that meet rigorous safety standards is an increasingly important skill - especially when it comes to products used by children. Trunki, the child's pull along suitcase, may have failed the BBC Dragon's Den test, but thanks to further testing and modification it's now taking the world by storm. We film with the product designer and at one of the world's leading test centres, to find out about the different tests carried out on children's products, why calibrating equipment is so important and how clever design reduced costs and time to market. Includes footage of rotational and injection moulding and mechanical and physical tests

FUNDAMENTALS OF TOOL DESIGN: COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN

Computer-aided design or CAD involves the use of computers and software to digitally create engineering drawings and models to aid in tooling and product design.

This program explores the tools and techniques used within these four fundamental computer-aided design categories:
  • 2-Dimensional CAD
  • 3-Dimensional Modeling
  • 3D Assembly Design
  • CAD Analysis

  • The 2-dimensional CAD segment examines orthographic projection, workflow, and detailing.

The 3-dimensional modeling segment details the use of 2D sketching, feature-based parametric 3D modeling, and design editing.

The segment on 3D assembly design features an emphasis on part mating/alignment, interference detection, and dynamic motion.

The CAD analysis segment is broken down into four basic principles:
  • Material Characteristics
  • Model Meshing
  • Boundary Conditions
  • Interpretation of Results

MANUFACTURING INSIGHTS: DFM - DESIGN FOR MANUFACTURING

At Storage Technology, a new assembly using DFM that costs 86% less, reduced part count from 119 to 36.

DFM applied to large hydraulic cylinders at Caterpillar, Inc. produced significant cost reduction.

Then, at Xerox, DFM was used to re-design a paper feed guide to go from five parts plus hardware to one part and snap fits.

Standardized components at IBM help expedite product development by offering the designers many necessary pre-designed "building blocks."

DIGITAL PRODUCT DESIGN: DESIGN FOR QUALITY, MANUFACTURING, ASSEMBLY & DISASSEMBLY PRINCIPLES, AND AN INKJET PRINTER GREEN ENGINEERING DISASSEMBLY USE CASE

In order to achieve professional quality product process and service system design engineering skills, besides a strong analytical, digital design and digital manufacturing assembly engineering foundation, one needs to learn basic and often very simple design rules. One of the best ways to learn these rules is to disassemble and analyze various products, try to understand the design manufacturing assembly processes followed, and also learn from mistakes. In this program Professor Ranky introduces, and to some extent illustrates several basic product design, process design, design for quality, assembly disassembly, and other design rules with simple and practical examples whilst disassembling an inkjet printer on screen. In particular, the rules and principles discussed with examples include: design for quality, maintenance, assembly, disassembly, green eco-friendly design issues, cost, risk, the concept of designing components, modules, and systems that can be assembled, as well as disassembled, material selection issues, design for the environment, the principle of 'z' stacking for assembly disassembly, modular design principles, some part handling, and feeding issues, automated assembly and disassembly challenges, and others.
