CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS: COGNITIVE BEHAVIOR THERAPY FOR ADOLESCENT DEPRESSION

With John F. Curry, PhD

Although peer pressure, stress and self-esteem issues are not new, and have been generally accepted as normal growing pains for adolescents, an increasing issue among today's adolescents is depression.

Fortunately, adolescent depression is a treatable condition: Evidence-based approaches are available and, by sharpening the skills needed to establish an effective working alliance with adolescents and applying these approaches, clinicians can provide excellent treatment.

The cognitive-behavioral approach demonstrated in this program by Dr. John F. Curry is based in developmental psychopathology and social cognitive learning theory, and typically includes behavioral activation, problem-solving, and cognitive restructuring. In the therapy demonstration, Dr. Curry applies his approach to behavioral activation and works with an adolescent teen who is suffering from depression.

RELATIONSHIPS: INTEGRATIVE COUPLE THERAPY

With Wachtel, Ellen F.; Wachtel, Paul L.

In this video program, Dr. Ellen F. Wachtel demonstrates her approach to couple therapy, which emphasizes the positives that still exist in the relationship despite the difficulties that have brought the couple to treatment.

Although not ignoring the couple's conflicts and complaints, this strength-based, integrative approach emphasizes the goal of helping each person in the couple to get more of what he or she is longing for, thereby highlighting positives rather than deficiencies, and fostering self-reflection rather than blame.

In this video program, Dr. Ellen Wachtel demonstrates this therapeutic approach with a couple dealing with an impasse in the relationship, while Dr. Paul Wachtel examines and highlights teaching moments taken from the demonstration.

SPECIFIC TREATMENTS FOR SPECIFIC POPULATIONS: COMPLEX POSTTRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER

With Steven N. Gold, PhD

Two common misconceptions about working with survivors who suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are that the disorder always stems from a single event and that effective treatment consists solely of a set of exposure-based interventions that address that one event.

However, individuals who have survived prolonged or repeated trauma often develop complex PTSD, a disorder consisting of forms of impairment much more extensive than in PTSD. Often, when trauma-focused exposure-based interventions are launched into prematurely, they are highly likely to cause deterioration rather than improvement.

In this video, Dr. Steven N. Gold demonstrates an approach to working with clients experiencing complex PTSD that focuses initially on helping them improve their quality of life in the present. By coaching clients on various facets of adult living, such as mastering effective coping skills, maintaining steady employment, and building a social support network, therapists can help them experience marked improvement in the present and form a stable base from which to address the lingering impact of traumatic experiences.

BEHAVIORAL HEALTH AND HEALTH COUNSELING: COUNSELING CANCER PATIENTS

With Ellen A. Dornelas, PhD

Most people endure emotional distress during and after cancer treatment. Psychotherapy, though effective, is under-utilized as a treatment option. Psychological reactions to a cancer diagnosis can include depression, anxiety, sexual dysfunction, and relational distress.

In this video, Dr. Ellen Dornelas demonstrates her approach to working with people with cancer using a cognitive-existential model focused on coping with the psychological complexity of cancer diagnosis and treatment. This video demonstration explores a cancer survivor's journey and unique psychosocial stressors. The goal of this therapy is to identify unmet emotional needs, provide support, and help the client to cope constructively with the uncertain outcomes associated with cancer.
In this video, Dr. Dornelas works with a woman regarding her adjustment to advanced breast cancer.

BEHAVIORAL HEALTH AND HEALTH COUNSELING: WORKING WITH MEDICAL PATIENTS IN INTEGRATED PRIMARY CARE

With Anne C. Dobmeyer, PhD, ABPP

The expansion of behavioral health integration in primary care settings over the past two decades has been facilitated by significant developments in models of integrated care.

In the primary care behavioral health model of integration, clinicians are integrated into primary care as behavioral health consultants to provide focused, evidence-based assessment and intervention to patients as well as consultative recommendations to the primary care provider. This arrangement of systemic and holistic care encourages patients and families to learn and implement self-management strategies that improve functioning and quality of life while also decreasing symptoms.

In this video program, Dr. Anne Dobmeyer demonstrates her work as a behavioral health consultant with a patient who is experiencing difficulties with managing diabetes, and shows also how a psychologist and primary care physician work together to provide seamless, team-based care.

CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS: MENTALIZATION-BASED TREATMENT WITH A 10-YEAR-OLD BOY

With Norka T. Malberg, PsyD, and Karin Ensink, PhD

Mentalization is an ability that most people naturally develop in late childhood involving the ability to accept that other people's actions derive from inner states and intentions, and the ability to imagine what those inner thoughts and desires might be. Similar to the ability to empathize, mentalization is key to regulating emotions and developing relationships.

Mentalization-based treatment for children seeks to help foster this ability and keep clients aged 5 - 12 on track developmentally.

In this video, Norka Malberg demonstrates this approach with a 10-year old boy with attention-deficit disorder. Dr. Malberg and Karin Ensink discuss highlights from the session and key elements of this therapy.

This video features an actor portraying a client on the basis of a composite of case material.

EMOTION IN PSYCHOTHERAPY: WORKING WITH EMOTION IN EMOTION-FOCUSED THERAPY

With Leslie S. Greenberg, PhD
Accompanied by Michael A. Tompkins, PhD, and Norka T. Malberg, PsyD

Emotion-focused therapy looks beyond a client's symptomatic behavior to the role that emotion plays in its formation. Emotion-focused therapists view emotion as our primary meaning system and as such emotion is used as the path to greater awareness of what is important in any given situation. Emotion-focused therapy reaches past awareness and acceptance of emotion by helping clients make sense of their feelings as well as transforming their core painful emotions.

In this program, Dr. Leslie S. Greenberg, the primary originator of emotion-focused therapy, discusses how it works with emotion, and guest experts Norka T. Malberg and Michael A. Tompkins ask questions as they watch clips from previously published videos that illuminate this model.

RELATIONSHIPS: FORGIVENESS IN COUPLE THERAPY

With Everett L. Worthington, Jr., PhD, and Steven J. Sandage, PhD

Helping one person to forgive another is among the biggest challenges in therapy, one that may be affected positively or negatively by client religious beliefs or spirituality.

In this video, Drs. Everett Worthington and Steven Sandage discuss how to effectively manage forgiveness within the context of couple therapy. Their evidence-based, spiritually oriented relational approach helps clients collaborate, connect, and work through conflict by analyzing emotional responses across three phases of therapy: uncovering personal resentment, understanding its development, and processing emotional regulation.

This process can lead to a fourth phase where the hurt partner recognizes his or her own need to be forgiven. This model may be integrated into any therapeutic approach, making it useful to students and practitioners of any theoretical orientation.

In this program, Dr. Sandage demonstrates this approach with a couple coping with forgiveness issues, and he and Dr. Worthington discuss the approach and analyze the demonstration session.

SYSTEMS OF PSYCHOTHERAPY: RESOLVING PROBLEMATIC REACTIONS IN EMOTION-FOCUSED THERAPY

With Robert Elliott, PhD

Emotion-focused therapy is an evidence-based treatment for clients who may be struggling with processing their feelings. This approach helps clients interpret problematic reactions to difficult life events and work through troubling emotions such as anger and anxiety. The therapeutic goal is to help clients learn how to process their emotions more effectively.

In this video, Dr. Robert Elliott introduces systematic evocative unfolding, a technique designed to reprocess a puzzling reaction to a situation in a person's life. The technique involves client and therapist together trying to re-experience the situation as a shared narrative, in order to help the client understand their reaction.

In this session, Dr. Elliott helps a woman better understand her detachment from her emotions, focusing on her lack of grief about her mother's death.

PSYCHOTHERAPY SUPERVISION: EMOTION-FOCUSED THERAPY SUPERVISION

With Leslie S. Greenberg, PhD
Hosted by Hanna Levenson, PhD

In Emotion-Focused Therapy Supervision, Dr. Leslie Greenberg demonstrates and discusses how to train and teach therapists using this approach to clinical supervision.

Emotion-focused therapy is a process-oriented experiential therapy in which the therapist assists the client to become aware of and access emotion. Supervision in this approach is based on the same fundamental principles as the therapy, with a focus on developing the supervisory relationship and on specific supervisory tasks. Supervision thus involves developing a supervisory alliance and identification of a focus, supervision task markers, what the supervisor's interventions will be at these markers and the supervisee processes they facilitate.

In this program, Dr. Greenberg and his supervisee engage in a supervisory session, and host Dr. Hanna Levenson interviews them about their work together, exploring this model through a discussion of highlights from the demonstration session.

SPECIFIC TREATMENTS FOR SPECIFIC POPULATIONS: EMOTION-FOCUSED THERAPY IN PRACTICE - WORKING WITH GRIEF AND ABANDONMENT

With Jeanne C. Watson, PhD, Cpsych

In Emotion-Focused Therapy in Practice, Jeanne C. Watson demonstrates her approach to psychotherapy, which helps to facilitate change in clients' psychological, emotional, and interpersonal functioning.

Emotion-focused therapy (EFT), the process-experiential approach, is rooted in experiential psychotherapy and emphasizes the role of "experiencing" in the change process. The primary goals of this approach are to promote more effective emotional processing and affect regulation, as well as enhanced differentiation of self and other to increase autonomy and self-care in relationships, and to engender more positive treatment of self.

In EFT, the therapeutic relationship is seen as central to the change process - not only as a facilitator of the development of a positive working alliance, but also as an active ingredient of change.

This program features Dr. Watson's work with a young woman who has experienced abandonment and trauma. Dr. Watson demonstrates maximal responsiveness to the client - establishing empathy, acceptance, genuineness, and prizing - to help the client feel safe and to begin to explore her emotional experience and conceptualize her grief.

PSYCHOLOGY AND THE NEW HEROISM

PHILIP ZIMBARDO and DANIEL ELLSBERG in conversation

Philip Zimbardo is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Stanford University and creator of the well-known Stanford Prison Experiment. Daniel Ellsberg is a former analyst at the Rand Corporation and served in the Pentagon under Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara. An author and political activist, he is best known as the whistleblower who released documents to the public which detailed the secrets and lies that shaped three decades of American foreign policy in Vietnam - documents which became known as the Pentagon Papers.

These two icons of progressive thought in America met for the first time to discuss a salient question for our times: Why are some people willing to take courageous nonviolent action in defense of ethical principles - even at personal risk to themselves? This video captures that conversation and calls for a new era of truth-telling or whistle blowing by citizens privy to crucial and often classified information that the public deserves to know. Zimbardo and Ellsberg also call for a new ethic of accountability by those leaders who govern the United States, its judiciary and its military.

They challenge ordinary people to do extraordinary things - to envision themselves as active and empowered and willing to take calculated risks in the service of their conscience and their fellow citizens. This defines the New Heroism. Students of psychology, sociology, political science, and recent United States history will find much to learn from this poignant and historic encounter.

DSM-5 AND PSYCHODIAGNOSTIC INTERVIEWING, THE - VOLUME 1: PSYCHIATRIC DIAGNOSIS AND INTERVIEWING

By Jason Buckles & Victor Yalom

The DSM 5 and Psychodiagnostic Interviewing, Jason Buckles and Victor Yalom take a nuanced and critical look at psychiatric diagnosis and the DSM-5, and then demonstrate in a step-by-step manner the components and skills necessary to do a diagnostic interview.

Whether you love the DSM or hate it, as a clinician you need to understand how to use it and how to avoid misusing it. The best clinicians seamlessly combine diagnostic interviewing and excellent rapport-building during the initial session, and in this video you'll learn how to do just that.

Begins with Jason Buckles and Victor Yalom digging deep into some of the most fundamental questions in the field of mental health: What is a mental disorder? What is a diagnosis? What are the benefits as well as the drawbacks of conceptualizing human problems as disorders? Is it appropriate to use the medical model to treat mental illness? What are some of the dangers of diagnosing culturally normative behaviors as disorders? The many valuable uses of our diagnostic system - from having a common language among professionals, to securing insurance coverage, to scientific research - are seamlessly woven into their dynamic discussion as well.

In the second half of the video, you'll get clear step-by-step instructions, illustrated with short clinical demonstrations, of the various components of doing a diagnostic interview: How do you introduce the interview to the client and get their consent? How can you ask the necessary questions to both hone in on a particular diagnosis and rule out others? How do you push a client for more specific information while also being mindful of attending to the alliance, especially in the first session? And finally, how do you bring it all together, weighing the information you've obtained to decide what their diagnosis is, or isn't, while keeping in mind that not all clients seeking help meet the criteria for a diagnosis?

This is the only series of its kind to take a complex and critical approach to the DSM, and Buckles and Yalom manage a delicate balance - neither cheerleading for the DSM nor taking a slash-and-burn approach. You are certain to have a better understanding of the DSM-5 and psychodiagnostic interviewing after watching it.

DSM-5 AND PSYCHODIAGNOSTIC INTERVIEWING, THE - VOLUME 3: DIAGNOSING DEPRESSIVE, BIPOLAR, AND ALCOHOL USE DISORDERS

By Jason Buckles & Victor Yalom

Covers diagnoses that can sometimes overlap and be hard to distinguish from one another: Depressive and persistent depressive disorders, bipolar and substance use disorders.

Depression is widespread in Western cultures but with so many varieties of depression and differences among how people experience it, how do we diagnose it and rule out the myriad other disorders that sometimes masquerade as depression? What constitutes mania? What's the difference between Bipolar I and II? When is depression "persistent" and when does it became serious enough to warrant a major depressive diagnosis? Can they coexist? How do you know if substance use is causing depression and how do you skillfully ply information from clients about their substance use when they would rather you don't?

Watch as Jason Buckles gently structures his questions and interactions to cover the necessary bases while listening carefully, joining, pacing, and allowing inconsistencies to simply be part of the interactions. Before, during, and after each vignette, commentary and explanations by both Buckles and Victor Yalom enhance the viewers learning experience, as well as voiceovers that describe diagnostic information, and explain skills and interventions as they are happening in live sessions with clients. Mental health professionals will benefit from the comprehensive presentation of symptoms and clinical skills provided in this video. Without sacrificing empathy, warmth, or humor, see how to gather targeted information to confidently arriving at an accurate diagnosis.

DSM-5 AND PSYCHODIAGNOSTIC INTERVIEWING, THE - VOLUME 4: DIAGNOSING ANOREXIA, SCHIZOPHRENIA AND BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER

By Jason Buckles & Victor Yalom

Schizophrenia, Anorexia, and Borderline Personality Disorder - difficult to treat, challenging for most clinicians and absolutely essential to diagnose accurately. Learn the specialized skills required to gather information and establish rapport with clients struggling with these disorders.

Certain diagnoses require specialized skill to both diagnose and treat, and anorexia, schizophrenia and borderline personality disorder all fit that description. With both anorexia and schizophrenia, medical information and contact with the treating physician is often necessary, while with borderline personality, symptoms may initially be masked and not emerge until months into therapy - making it all the more important to be skilled at obtaining the necessary clinical information in the initial interview. In this final installment of the series, watch skilled interviewers working with a young man who has schizophrenia, an aspiring ballerina struggling with anorexia, and a woman with all the features we associate with borderline personality disorder. You'll see the therapists struggle with these clients - as lack of insight and psychotic thinking can often be present with these disorders - and still find a way to gather information for a working diagnosis.

Jason Buckles and Victor Yalom offer insightful commentary before, during and after each vignette so that you get a feel for how to work with clients who may be resistant to opening up, unable to self-reflect or even hostile to the therapist. As most clinicians encounter challenging and sometimes mystifying clients and symptoms, the tools covered in this volume are essential!

GROUP DYNAMICS AND THE NEW HEROISM: THE ETHICAL ALTERNATIVE TO THE STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT

By Phil Zimbardo and Bill Roller

GROUP DYNAMICS AND THE NEW HEROISM is a six hour video series which captures the unscripted, spontaneous group process of eight individuals as they learn how to work together and form groups that will help motivate and sustain the courageous actions they wish to pursue.

Our film tracks them as they obey their conscience and act in concert with each other. The viewer can follow the steps of the group as they organize themselves to act courageously and nonviolently for an ethical cause - then see them carry their project to fulfillment. We supply commentaries to help viewers follow the progress of the group.

Scapegoating was the primary dynamic in the Stanford Prison Experiment. But scapegoating is not the only way to create drama in a narrative. We present a dramatic story that is fresh and new - of people who resist scapegoating in all its guises, challenge unjust authority, and act in the public interest.

Our film series will help people practice civil obedience to universal values enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the laws of the United States. It will guide viewers to act with respect for humanity, resist scapegoating of those who appear different, and activate the creative energy of nonconformity.

This film series is essential viewing for organizations dedicated to peace and justice who want to put their political and social thought to work in real life situations. College and university departments of social psychology, sociology, psychology, political science, anthropology, and other human sciences will find the format useful in creating classes that challenge and inspire students.

IRVIN YALOM AND THE ART OF PSYCHOTHERAPY - IRVIN YALOM IN SESSION: EUGENIA

By Irvin Yalom

Watch Irvin Yalom work with Eugenia, a 23-year-old struggling with a sudden crippling existential panic, over the course of 9 deeply moving sessions.

Meet Eugenia: A bright, articulate, optimistic and seemingly happy 23-year-old who one day, while ambling through the streets of New York, is beset by an existential loneliness and awareness of death that haunts her from that day forward. Struck hard by an unexpected and seemingly inexplicable case of "existential angst," she arrives to therapy with complaints of anxiety and a sense of insignificance that are making it hard to get through her day-to-day life. "I feel like I've realized something that cannot be unrealized.... And I just see no point," she reveals to Yalom.

Through excerpts of the 9-session course of therapy, we see Yalom struggle to understand this "sudden onset" of death anxiety, particularly since in the early sessions Eugenia claims to have had a perfectly happy childhood and to never have really struggled much until her trip to New York. With warmth and candor - and detailed, behind-the-scenes commentary describing his thinking and interventions - we see Yalom slowly unravel the mystery of Eugenia's problem, and the repressed pain that led her to see him. We see Yalom utterly bewildered by her seeming contradictions, unsure of how to help her, and then watch him utilize his own vulnerability to elicit hers. Along the journey, we learn how to work in the here-and-now, how to incorporate Yalom's existential approach into therapy with clients, and ultimately how to take risks with our clients in service of their growth.

IRVIN YALOM AND THE ART OF PSYCHOTHERAPY - IRVIN YALOM IN SESSION: GARETH

By Irvin Yalom

Watch master therapist Irvin Yalom work in live sessions with Gareth, a 69 year old man who has struggled with anxiety most of his life, and is now facing his upcoming retirement with a sense of existential dread.

Gareth is the type of client many therapists cherish: he is bright, articulate, engaging, and quite motivated to find a way to reduce his distress. And yet...he presents certain challenges as well. He is insightful, and can speak easily about himself and his difficulties, often staying at a cognitive level, so it may feel that it is hard to break new ground with him. So it's most interesting to witness first hand the various strategies Yalom uses to connect with him and help him gain some new perspectives.

There are several moving exchanges between these two men, both in the later stages of their lives. Any therapist who sees our work as helping clients navigate the challenges of the human condition will find these sessions riveting, and Yalom's commentary illuminating. And if that's not how you typically see therapy, perhaps you'll reconsider!

A father of two, happily married with a secure job, he can't quite figure out why he's having so much trouble going through with the procedure. It's not long before he and Yalom dive deep below the surface question to the dreams, fantasies and "other lives" that are speaking to Luke in both conscious and unconscious ways. Yalom weaves together disparate pieces of Luke's life to call him to a deeper reckoning with his choices, illustrating how an existential perspective can aid us in exploring the types of human struggles we encounter daily in our offices.

MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING FOR ADOLESCENT HEALTH BEHAVIOR

By Cathy Cole

Learn how to effectively support and empower adolescents dealing with health concerns using Motivational Interviewing skills and techniques.

In this course, MI trainer Cathy Cole, LCSW, outlines the basic principles of MI known as the "MI Spirit," and together with colleague Nikki Cockern, PhD, demonstrates how to apply these principles in 4 sessions with high school and college-age teens dealing with serious health issues: HIV, weight management, Type 1 diabetes, and risky sexual behavior.

Covering the four MI processes, change talk and sustain talk, and "the righting reflex" - our natural yet ill-advised urge to "fix" our clients - Cole emphasizes the method's nonjudgmental, client-centered nature.

In sessions with Sean, Carlotta, Olga, and Missy, you'll observe how to use MI to manage risk, communicate nonjudgment, deepen rapport, and draw out your clients' innate strengths. This video also offers realistic commentary, in which Cole discusses both the successes and the challenges of each session and how to work with your own "righting reflex."

You will see why MI is so widely adopted in health-care settings and how its spirit of collaboration reduces resistance and promotes adolescent interest in change.

MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING FOR ADOLESCENT SUBSTANCE USE

By Sebastian Kaplan, PhD, & Ali Hall, JD

Acquire practical Motivational Interviewing tools to help you manage challenging sessions with adolescent clients struggling with substance use.

Working with adolescents can be challenging enough without adding substance use issues to the mix. When teens' age-appropriate desire for autonomy gets compromised by substance use and addiction, it can be difficult for clinicians to effectively navigate heightened levels of client ambivalence alongside their own "righting reflex" - their desire to fix their clients.

In this compelling new video, Sebastian Kaplan, PhD, and Ali Hall, JD, demonstrate how to manage these elements using tools from Motivational Interviewing, a client-centered alternative to traditional, often confrontational addiction treatment. Here, you'll discover how to deepen rapport, diffuse resistance, and draw out adolescent clients' intrinsic strengths.

Learn strategies to engage teenage clients who do not even want to be in your office, much less receive treatment, through clinical demonstrations with three adolescent clients using marijuana, heroin, and opiates. Develop your skills to support adolescent clients, without conveying the disrespect they might expect from adults in authority roles.

This course is a must If you're seeking resources for teens, addiction and recovery, or client-centered counseling.

MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING IN JUVENILE JUSTICE SETTINGS

By Ali Hall

Without a strong alliance and clear boundaries, mandated clients will often shut down or act out - especially if they are teenagers. How do you work to meet both institutional and clinical goals? Here, Motivational Interviewing expert Ali Hall demonstrates how to use this collaborative approach in juvenile justice settings.

Are you looking for an alternative to the directive approaches traditionally used in Juvenile Justice settings? Working with mandated clients is a complicated endeavor to begin with, but when your clients are teens who are seeking - and testing the limits of - their autonomy, treatment can easily backfire without a collaborative working alliance.

In this course Ali Hall, JD, and her colleagues demonstrate how to reach effective outcomes with juvenile justice clients using Motivational Interviewing (MI). Through demonstrations with 4 clients, you will see how MI enables the counselors to partner with teens in ways that validate and empower them, even within the confines of the correctional system. What's more, you'll learn how to sidestep the urge to advise, direct, or confront struggling youth.

See how MI provides Hall with the tools to build a strong alliance with Samantha, on probation for marijuana possession, and how it enables her to take responsibility for her own behavior. Daniel Domaguin will show you how to deescalate angry clients using MI techniques in juvenile hall, while Deborah Collins demonstrates both MI-compliant and non-compliant approaches working with Tony, a teen mandated to counseling for substance use.

Finally, a roundtable discussion with the 3 counselors demonstrates how to provide ongoing coaching support for your staff.

This highly praised course fills a much-needed gap for training staff and counselors in this challenging environment.

Learn how to apply Motivational Interviewing principles to resistant adolescent clients and how to support and empower them to change their destructive behaviors.

In this course, Sebastian Kaplan, PhD, demonstrates how to successfully apply MI in 4 individual and family sessions with 2 thirteen-year-old girls.

Marley's falling grades and increased truancy and Katie's self-harming behavior in response to bullying have brought them into a therapist's office. Watch as Kaplan demonstrates how to use MI to manage risk, deepen rapport, and draw out his clients' innate strengths. This video also offers in-depth commentary, in which Kaplan openly discusses his frustrations in session and then shows how to make therapeutic use of them.

In addition to an overview of Motivational Interviewing (MI) and its application to adolescents, you will learn how to bring parents into the clinical picture and discover helpful tools for working with your own internal responses to clients.

This course is an excellent resource for clinicians who want useful strategies for Motivational Interviewing, adolescent therapy, or family-based interventions.
