SEXUALITY, INTIMACY, AND DEMENTIA IN RESIDENTIAL CARE SETTINGS

This 5-chaptered DVD brings forth a thoughtful, much needed exploration of sexuality, intimacy, and dementia, and the complex issues that impact residents, family members, and care staff. Through five 15- to 20-minute videos, the DVD looks at the relevant concerns of intimacy and sexuality on quality of life, freedom to express sexuality, capacity to consent, resident protections, and potential legal ramifications. It also touches on the needs of LGBT residents, how to address resident-to-resident and resident-to-visitor encounters, and how to find workable solutions with the support of family members.

The 5-DVD Chapters cover:
Part 1: The Effects of Dementia on Intimacy and Sexuality
Part 2: Responding to Sexual Expressions
Part 3: Consensual Intimacy and Sexuality
Part 4: Spousal and Family Responses
Part 5: Non-consensual Intimacy and Sexuality

This DVD poses many relevant questions, and is designed to equip care staff with a well-rounded understanding of the sensitive issues concerning intimacy, sexuality, and the rights of persons with dementia, as well as, how to respond to expressions of sexuality in a manner that promotes both resident dignity and safety.

FEED HER WHILE SHE WALKS

When a resident won't sit long enough to eat, or insists on leaving, or wanders into potentially unsafe areas - what do you do?

This 20-minute DVD will help. Using real people and real situations, it offers thought-provoking insights into wandering behavior, and shows effective examples of providing person-centered care to residents who wander or insist on leaving. It also shows how an interdisciplinary approach to understanding and adjusting care to each resident's specific needs can promote independence and safety, and identifies environmental cues that can help deter wandering into unsafe or private areas (such as, another resident's room).

Includes strategies for:
  • Working with residents who wander at night
  • Working with residents who keep leaving the building
  • Working with residents who move items or get into things

  • Caregivers will be inspired to find creative, flexible ways to redirect and engage persons who wander or want to leave.

    ASSESSING NUTRITION IN OLDER ADULTS

Due to any number of physical, social, medical or environmental factors, older adults are often at risk for poor nutrition. Developed to assess nutritional status in older adults, the two-part Mini-Nutritional Assessment (MNA) is a valuable resource to identify older adults that are at risk for malnutrition. This DVD demonstrates the assessment process, as well as, how to measure arm and leg circumferences, and compute body mass index. The DVD also documents specific risk factors for older adults, and offers an accurate, age-appropriate assessment that care providers can use to develop an effective nutritional plan for the patient.

    COMMUNICATION DIFFICULTIES

Although dementia may reduce expressive and receptive abilities, persons with cognitive loss are still able to communicate long after language abilities and understanding diminish. This DVD discusses ways to assess the expressive and receptive skills of older adults with dementia or other medical conditions. It offers a number of interventions caregivers can apply, including the use of a 9-question assessment and intervention tool that promotes better overall communication and patient safety.

EATING AND FEEDING ISSUES IN OLDER ADULTS WITH DEMENTIA

Older adults with dementia often have an added risk of poor nutrition and hydration, due to cognitive loss. The Edinburgh Feeding and Dementia Scale equips caregivers to observe the older adult for eating or feeding difficulties, and target specific interventions that increase nutritional intake.

Includes suggestions on when and how often to do an assessment to ensure accuracy. Caregivers will also find helpful insights on how an older adult's ability to eat is affected by late-stage Alzheimer's.

FREEDOM OF SEXUAL EXPRESSION: DEMENTIA AND RESIDENT RIGHTS IN LONG-TERM CARE FACILITIES

Narrated by Anne Meara, Freedom of Sexual Expression looks at sexuality and intimacy as basic human rights that should not be denied simply because the person has a level of decreased cognizance and lives in a nursing home.

    Freedom of sexual expression also:
  • gives staff members effective strategies to deal with inappropriate sexual behaviors
  • encourages family members to understand and respect their loved one's continued need for intimacy
  • provides sample policies and procedures on residents' rights regarding sexual expression and physical protection.

WHEN BAD THINGS HAPPEN: RACIST COMMENTS/SEXUAL TALK/INSULTS/A RESIDENT DIES

When Bad Things Are Said: Racist Comments (Program 1)

Verbal abuse is often one of the most challenging behaviors associated with dementia...

In Program One, caregivers will be equipped with positive, hands-on interventions they can use to productively manage residents who use racially abusive language. The program also encourages a "plan-ahead" mentality that will enable caregivers to keep control of their emotions (and the situation) by choosing to not react to the words, by being aware of which residents are more prone to verbal abuse, and by avoiding or "working around" potential problem situations. 14 minutes

When Bad Things Are Said: Sexual Talk (Program 2)

Persons with dementia often lose their sense of judgment, or mistake a caregiver for a loved one...

In Program Two, caregivers will learn ways to offset sexual talk and behavior by redirecting the resident to an activity or getting help from a co-worker when dealing with residents who have a tendency to "get sexual". Strategies include further defusing the situation by using humor, and applying a gentle yet firm tone of voice to let the resident know that "it is not okay". 14 minutes

When Bad Things Are Said: Insults (Program 3)

Harsh accusations, embarrassing comments - caregivers of persons with dementia often experience these situations while providing care...

In Program Three, caregivers will learn practical strategies to stay calm and not react abruptly when dealing with residents who "act out" through yelling or rude language. Intervention techniques include encouraging caregivers to "think differently" about the situation by readjusting what may be causing discomfort for the resident, or trying to understand what the resident is trying to express through his or her verbal actions. 14 minutes

When A Resident Dies (Program 4)

It's natural to feel a sense of loss or sadness when a resident dies...

In Program Four, caregivers will learn about the different ways grief can affect morale and productivity, and the importance of not ignoring it. As it looks at two specific types of grief--heart-guided and head-guided--the program encourages each caregiver to explore how he/she personally deals with grief, and offers strategies other caregivers have found to address and respond to their own feelings of grief. 13 minutes
