Raising a child is challenging for any parent. But the challenges can be tenfold for parents of children with special needs. Parents struggle with all the same kinds of child-rearing issues as other families, but the issues are often magnified. Special needs children require a large amount of attention, guidance and support from their parents. This program focuses on empowering both parents and their children to reach their full potential as parents share their stories of faith along with the challenges and the rewards of raising a special needs child. It informs and educates as parents share their experiences and practical strategies to guide, support and give hope to other parents.
When a child exhibits "inappropriate" behavior or is unable to interact socially, psychiatric problems may be the cause. This program seeks to identify the difference between childhood challenges and behavior rooted in mental illness. Families share their stories, while mental-health experts discuss treatment and coping strategies.
The issues surrounding ADHD are fiercely debated. Who decides when rambunctious behavior has become a psychiatric concern? Do the benefits of Ritalin outweigh its risks? Is ADHD even a true disorder, or just another way for pharmaceutical companies to make money? This program speaks with students diagnosed with ADHD and to nearly a dozen medical and academic experts about its identification and treatment. Pediatrics professor William B. Carey believes that ADHD is being over-diagnosed, and Dr. William Pelham describes a successful treatment plan based on behavior modification-even as young people with ADHD praise the positive results of taking their meds. Other topics include genetic factors, medication risks, teachers as diagnosticians, and the centuries-long history of medicalizing hyperactivity.
The story of Jo and Darnell Cauley and their two sons
Jo and Darnell Cauley had two typical children, but their third was slow to develop communications skills. That was two decades ago, when autism was a rare condition. They found little information about it and few accommodations. So they taught themselves, sought out autism experts, and read everything they could find. But they didn't stop there.
They continued to study all emerging data about autism. Then, a decade later, they had a second son with autism. This time they were ready. Jo and Darnell have since dedicated their lives 24/7 to their sons' education and it's paying off. They've developed a system of supports for school, home, and community to be envied. The Cauleys have redefined what commitment means through their hard work, dedication and love of family. Autism Times Two is their story.
Simon Baron Cohen discusses his case study Another Advanced Test of Theory of Mind. Cohen explains the aims and origins of his study, illustrates his 'Eyes Test' methodology, explaining why the eyes were chosen, and talks about his findings and their implications for understanding autism. The DVD is intercut with illustrative footage of autistic children, their parents and autistic adults.
The real-life stories of four blind people reveals their philosophies and achievements; then focuses on training and rehabilitation methods for the blind, to help dispel misconceptions about blindness.
Featuring the poems of famous poets, such as Robert Frost and Emily Dickinson, this true story tells the uplifting story of a strong-willed paraplegic who returns home after rehab and tries to come to terms with life. To soften his shock, he reads poetry about trees, reflecting on what he was and is now; then he is motivated to ride outside on a special off-road hand cycle and to take photos of nature. Poetry, nature and his powerful will help him become a more perceptive and productive human being.

Autism is referred to as a spectrum disorder: those affected by it can exhibit a wide range of symptoms and of developmental progress. It is this extreme variability which makes the disorder sometimes difficult to recognize, and may lead to children being misdiagnosed as mentally ill or retarded, when early and appropriate intervention is so crucial to treating children with autism.
In this DVD, we share in the experiences of several families who have struggled to love and care for children who fall at various points on the spectrum of autism. We learn about the symptoms which first alerted them to the possibility of a developmental disorder in their child, and the challenges they faced in obtaining an accurate diagnosis, and then in securing proper treatment and an educational setting appropriate to their children's needs. We hear as well the perspectives of clinicians and educators who explain the difficulties they face in recognizing autism, and point to some of the common developmental signs which may be early signals of the disorder. These include delays or regression in learning to talk; difficulties in understanding and integrating various forms of sensory stimuli; and failure to develop normal speech, language or early social skills.
Yet the overriding message of this production is that caring and aware parents and professionals can be extraordinarily effective in enabling children with autism to participate in the world around them.

This manners video to show students from upper elementary through high school how to act during some of the most common interactions between people. It features clear, straightforward demonstrations of appropriate and inappropriate behavior -- and we added a dash of fun to keep adolescent attention spans engaged.

The video is also attuned to the way many children with social skill deficits need to absorb information.
These DVDs are designed to help children of different ages understand and support their siblings on the autism spectrum. One DVD applies to siblings diagnosed with autism, and the other applies to siblings diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome.
Each DVD contains four programs; three for siblings of different ages and developmental levels, and one for their parents. The sibling programs are for children ages 4-7, ages 7-12 and ages 12 to adult. While the two DVDs have a similar format, each is unique. For example, we interviewed families dealing with autism for the autism DVD and families dealing with Asperger Syndrome for the Asperger Syndrome DVD.
These videos show siblings that other kids are facing the same challenges they face, and explores a range of ways the kids interviewed have learned to get along with and enjoy their brothers and sisters. The videos also can help parents understand the special needs of their neurotypical children. The segments for siblings ages 4-7 feature puppets and the segments for older siblings feature interviews with brother and sisters. We interviewed mothers and fathers for the parent segments.
Overall, we interviewed members of 27 families who have boys and girls with Asperger Syndrome to create these videos. After viewing these programs, siblings should have a better understanding that their brothers and sisters aren't trying to be difficult, and should be more willing to treat them with tolerance, caring and respect.
