Manish Arora is one of the biggest icons in the world of Indian fashion today. He is known for a rich palette of psychedelic colors and kitsch motifs in garments combining India and the West. With creations worn by stars like Lady Gaga, he now has international acclaim. In India on the Catwalk, Arora takes the audience back to where it all began, telling a personal story about his rise to fame the international fashion scene.
From an almost accidental application to the National Institute of Fashion Technology in New Delhi, and his first creations, Arora's career took him to the studio and a clothing company in Paris with hundreds of employees, a place where his ideas and everything melts together in colorful culture, art, design and fashion. But while he is praised on the international stage, in India, where fashion designers are thought to be ladies' tailors, he is a controversial character.

Engineers are constantly developing new lightweight, durable textiles to be used in many facets of our daily lives. Manufacturers of airplanes and automobiles are increasingly turning to textiles, such as carbon fibers, to produce their new models. They rely on carbon fibers due to light weight and durable properties. For instance, the wing of an airplane might be metal, but many of the interior parts are made of carbon fiber. Aircraft engineers combine carbon fiber with other lightweight materials to create composites which are usually 20 to 30% lighter than metal alloys. Carbon fiber threads are made up of between 1,000 and 48,000 tiny filaments. The filaments are created by oxidizing, or burning a synthetic polymer in a 2000 degree furnace, turning it into almost pure carbon.
Engineers are finding uses for new high tech materials, such as QTC - a polymer embedded with millions of tiny pointed metal particles. QTC acts like a resistor, but the metal particles are so close together, that if something in the environment changes, the charge between particles increases and electrons can jump from one to another in a process called quantum tunneling. QTC is so sensitive that its resistance will alter if there are changes in sound, smell, temperature, or pressure. In future space missions, QTC might assist astronauts with fans, lights and other devices inside of their spacesuits - controlled by so called soft switches - devices that make use of the fact that QTC becomes more conductive when pressure is applied.

Percy Savage is a maverick. He has led an amazing life in and around the world of designer fashion and influenced the way the industry developed. A Savage Life In Fashion combines and explores the memories he has; the people he knows; the history made to reveal an intimate world of creative expression, societal change, personal failure, collective triumph and the history of an art synonymous with opulence, luxury and refinement.
A Savage Life in Fashion is about a man whose influence was everywhere but is unknown outside the industry. Raised in the Australian outback, Percy arrived in Paris in 1947; the year Christian Dior launched his New Look. He would later become a friend of the man who revived the glory of couture and inadvertently, provide the name for the most famous of Dior fragrances: Eau Sauvage. It was at the House of Lanvin that Percy was asked to start the first Propaganda department, as it was then called, eventually renaming it PR. During his years in Paris, Percy weaved himself into the Parisian fabric and counted among friends, Dior, Beaton, Cocteau and Maria Callas. Whilst in Paris he travelled the globe, promoting and exhorting designers, journalists, buyers and manufacturers. He introduced Yves Saint-Laurent to Dior and created the explosion that was Mary Quant. He was PR for Nina Ricci during its heyday before moving to England in the 1970s. Percy had been asked by the powers-that-be to put London on a par with Paris, which he did, albeit at his own expense.
A Savage Life in Fashion opens amidst the refined excitement of the Christian Dior 2004 Spring/Summer couture show. Placing Percy within the contemporaneous reality of haute couture is made all the more pertinent as the film looks back at a post-war, history of fashion, in particular Percy's career in Paris and the foundation of fashion as we recognise it today. This retrospection provides an insight into what makes fashion perennially fascinating and forever reflective, both positively and negatively, of whom, what and why we are.
A Savage Life in Fashion includes an array of stunning IMX and Super 8 footage, exclusive archive film and photography. The film is narrated by Joanna Lumley and features interviews with Mary Quant, Hubert de Givenchy and Yuki as well as other eminent designers, journalists, historians and executives, exploring the fundamental dynamics of a much-vaunted aesthetic. Ultimately, it is a story about a man who did as he pleased, to please those in a world transfixed by image, beauty and style.

A range of animal (protein) fibres are shown, as are the animal sources from which they are obtained, and methods of preparation and production of these fibres are given, examples including shearing, washing and carding in both hand and manufacturing situations. The second program in the Talking Textiles series outlines yarn production and the properties of different woven and knitted fabrics. It gives the reasons for twisting yarns, discussing the 'S' and 'Z' twists and plying yarns, and shows fibres being prepared for spinning plus finished slivers. Primitive methods of spinning such as drop spindle and spinning wheels are shown and related to industrial methods including wool and cotton spinning. Students will also witness fancy yarns production - slub, boucle and chenille - and the properties of these, with the final chapter referring to synthetic filaments which can be created exploiting the thermoplastic qualities of the polymer.
