HENRY IV, PART 1: LIVE FROM SHAKESPEARE'S GLOBE

King Henry IV has deposed Richard II to claim the throne of England, but feels deeply troubled by his actions. Is God punishing Henry for Richard's murder by giving him Hal-who spends drunken evenings carousing with Falstaff-as a son? Would not Hotspur be a more appropriate successor? Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part 1 contains themes of honor and kingship, but it may be the subtext of difficult father-son relationships that intrigues viewers the most. This production, performed at the reconstructed Globe Theatre, features Roger Allam, winner of the Olivier Awards' "Best Actor" prize for his portrayal of Falstaff. With Oliver Cotton (King Henry IV), Sam Crane (Hotspur), and Jamie Parker (Prince Hal). Directed by Dominic Dromgoole.

HENRY IV, PART 2: LIVE FROM SHAKESPEARE'S GLOBE

Henry IV is dying as Prince Hal matures from a rebellious idler into a young man fit to assume the crown. Falstaff has stopped drinking long enough to raise a militia-but will his abiding devotion to Hal be rewarded? Henry IV, Part 2 includes some of Shakespeare's greatest scenes: the deathbed reconciliation of the old king and his son, the reunion of Falstaff with Shallow, and Hal's devastating rejection of his one-time mentor and boon companion. This staging of Shakespeare's classic history play, filmed during a performance at the reconstructed Globe Theatre, was directed by Dominic Dromgoole and features Roger Allam in his Olivier award-winning role as Falstaff. With Oliver Cotton (King Henry IV) and Jamie Parker (Prince Hal).

HENRY VIII: LIVE FROM SHAKESPEARE'S GLOBE

The Tudor Court is locked in a power struggle between its nobles and the ambitious, manipulative Cardinal Wolsey, the King's first minister. When Henry seeks to use Wolsey's influence in Rome to dissolve his marriage, the Cardinal acts in his own best interests, though Queen Katherine is soon tossed aside in favor of Anne Bullen (Boleyne). Famous in its own day as much for its spectacular staging as its psychological insights, this production of Henry VIII, filmed at the reconstructed Globe Theatre, is a gorgeous pageant of fireworks and royal ceremony. With Dominic Rowan (Henry VIII), Ian McNeice (Cardinal Wolsey), and Kate Duchene (Queen Katherine). Directed by Mark Rosenblatt.

MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR, THE: LIVE FROM SHAKESPEARE'S GLOBE

ir John Falstaff is down on his luck, and so decides to pursue liaisons with two rich but respectably married ladies-who in a series of sly maneuvers, effectively turn the tables on him. With its comic mix-ups, broad humor, and amusingly implausible plot line, The Merry Wives of Windsor has been called the forerunner of the modern sitcom. This staging of Christopher Luscombe's acclaimed production features Christopher Benjamin as the lecherous, scheming Falstaff, and Serena Evans and Sarah Woodward as the equally crafty objects of his affection. Viewers have a front-row seat at the restored Globe for one of Shakespeare's most accessible works.

    Reviews
  • "A rollicking good time - menacing whispers, daggers and blood obviously have their funny side, at least with this fascinated young audience." - Daily Mail

  • "Full of common sense, - in the end, it is we actors who are on the spot-. Scenes that start rehearsal as straightforward Shakespeare babble, assume dramatic shape." - The Times, London

JUST THE FACTS: SHAKESPEARE IN LONDON

Follow William Shakespeare through 16th and 17th Century London, as the bard created many of the most important works ever written. This incredible period is a source of continued fascination and was portrayed in 1998's Academy Award-winning Best Picture, Shakespeare in Love, also dramatized in 2006's Elizabeth I, an Emmy Award-winning television miniseries, and NOW a new feature film starring Cate Blanchett, Elizabeth, The Golden Age.

The story begins with the first written documentation of Shakespeare in London - his life on the bank of the River Thames, against the dramatic backdrop of the New Globe Playhouse. The "Virgin Queen" Elizabeth I sits upon the throne and Christopher Marlowe (famous poet and playwright) is at the height of his popularity, but there are rumblings in the theatre awningˇK of a young upstart who has stolen ideas from the undisputed master!

Illustrated by dramatic reconstruction of late Elizabethan life and scenes from the plays themselves, this program shows many sites that were known to Shakespeare - from the Tower of London to the taverns made famous by Falstaff and other Shakespearean characters, and of course, the murky River Thames. Shakespeare in London places the Bard in the context of his times by using accounts of those who knew him during the major events of the time including the threat of the Spanish Armada; political intrigue at the court of Queen Elizabeth; voyages and discovery of far away lands; the plague, and even the untimely death of Christopher Marlowe.

The story of Shakespeare in London equals the finest of the works that brought him such fame. It will be enjoyed by all lovers of popular literature and particularly Renaissance England.

In this first workshop, Cicely Berry introduces us to the fundamentals of meter and rhythm in Shakespeare. JACKSON, CHERRY JONES, CLAIRE DANES, EMILY WATSON, KATE BURTON, HELEN HUNT, LINDSAY DUNCAN, ROBERT SEAN LEONARD, PAUL JESSON, LENNIE JAMES, TRELLIS STEPTER, DIANE VENORA, LOLITA DAVIDOVICH, TOBY STEPHENS, CATHY TYSON, BLYTHE DANNER, DUNCAN BELL and VICTOR GARBER

WORKING SHAKESPEARE: WORKSHOP 2 - UNDER THE TEXT: SUBTEXT AND THE WORLD OF THE PLAY

The group explores how the very choice of language and imagery takes us into the world of the play, and into the inner world of the character. Cicely Berry introduces us to the opening scenes of two of Shakespeare's most powerful plays - A Midsummer Night's Dream and Hamlet. Students work on the first three speeches of The Dream where they uncover the hidden passion and sexuality in Shakespeare's language which set the mind's stage for the extraordinary romance of that midsummer night. In Hamlet, the spareness of the language and the spaces within it open our ears to the mystery central to Hamlet's dilemma. We learn how the vocabulary of each play takes us into its unique world. In the darkened rehearsal studio, the opening scene of Hamlet is whispered with stunning impact by Robert Sean Leonard, Toby Stephens, Lennie James and Paul Jesson .

WORKING SHAKESPEARE: WORKSHOP 3 - PROSE AND VERSE TEXTS: LANGUAGE AND IMAGERY REVEAL THE CHARACTERS INNER LANDSCAPE

This workshop examines the prose texts in one classic play, Henry V, and in one modern play, Edward Bond's Lear as well as texts from Julius Caesar, Richard III, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Macbeth. Cicely Berry opens up the process of integrating the meaning of the text with the motive and intention of the characters.

How do we enter the heightened, extravagant language of Shakespeare and yet feel truthful in today's world? How do performers excite the audience with Shakespeare's rich imagery and dynamic rhythm and yet make it real for the twenty - first century? We assume that a sophisticated intellectual background is required to grapple with Shakespeare. But there is a much deeper, almost primal response, as available to inner city students as to their counterparts in the private school, to the sound and rhythm in Shakespeare's language which arouses our emotions - feelings of anger and sorrow, of passion and laughter.
