ITALIAN CATHEDRALS: THE HEART OF FLORENCE

The Basilica of Saint Mary of the Flower, the central cathedral of Florence, was constructed over eight centuries. Under the supervision and funding of the Wool Merchants' Guild, generations of Florentine artists and architects dedicated their lives to the project, setting in stone changes in the aesthetic ideals of the time and advances in engineering. The biography of Filippo Brunelleschi, the brilliant self-taught master who introduced the technique of one-point perspective, designed the cathedral's dome as well as machinery necessary for its construction is intertwined with the story of the cathedral and the city itself, his career, which was full of professional rivalry and inspiration to future artists and engineers. Restoration workshops still follow the traditional techniques of the master sculptors who adorned the cathedral's interior and fa?ade.

ITALIAN CATHEDRALS: THE SOUL OF VENICE

After the Fall of the Roman Empire, an Eastern Roman province of Venetia survived the conquest by the Franks. It gradually grew to become a crucial trade center between the Byzantine Empire and Europe. Saint Mark's Basilica was built in place of an older church and from the very start, became a symbol of the economic and political power of Venice. The design, a mix of Eastern and Western basilica, its ornaments-an imposing display of Byzantine mosaics and altar pieces, Gothic sculptures and lavish treasures stripped off the buildings of the old empire. The famous bronze Horses taken from Constantinople's Hippodrome stood for centuries as symbols of Venice's unruly defiance, and a legend of empires falling whenever they were moved, grew around the monumental sculptures. The Most Serene Republic of Venice fell to Napoleon's conquest, and the Basilica has had to face the challenges of age, negligence and tourism.

THE EIFFEL TOWER

By Jacques Vichet

The Eiffel Tower has greeted since its creation nearly 250 million people, becoming the first visited paid monument in the world with over 7 million tourists a year. It was built by Gustave Eiffel for the Universal Exhibition of 1889. For over forty years, it remained the tallest in the world. Symbol of Paris and France, it is unavoidable and we meet all those who work and who watch over it with admiring eyes. Versailles Palace is more than a monument. It has been built gradually, according to the wishes of all the kings of France, from mid seventeenth century until the Revolution of 1789. A model for all of Europe, both for its beauty and its history, it is a reflection of classical art including architecture and sculpture. It will give birth to the famous "French gardens" with its labyrinths. Stretched out on 800 hectares, the area of Versailles was the heart and home of the French monarchy in the seventeenth and eighteenth century. Heritage and history merge. Today, Versailles is still home to numerous cultural events.

THE MONT ST-MICHEL AND NOTRE DAME

By Jacques Vichet

The Mont St-Michel in Normandy is a place of pilgrimage and tourism. The building was unique relics of medieval art, connecting the sky to land, nature to man. It includes its granite island and its bay. The very high tides in the region (more than ten meters) allow much of the bay to be discovered at low tide. The essential part of the rock is covered by the footprint of the abbey of Mont St-Michel and his area. It has become a world famous place for both its spiritual and symbolic size and its historic and architectural interest

VERSAILLES PALACE - THE CHATEAU AND THE GARDENS

By Jacques Vichet

The Chateau of Versailles remains forever the emblematic symbol of Louis XIV, whose reign lasted for almost half a century. It is recognised as one of the most beautiful works of art of the 17th century France. In the beginning it was the site of a modest chateau built by Louis XIII as a hunting lodge. The site was then chosen by Louis XIV for the construction of the palace which stands there to this day, a symbol of royal absolutism and the incarnation of Classical French art. In the 1670s, Louis XIV built the Grand Apartments of the King and Queen, a luxurious, stately reception area. The most symbolic of the rooms is no doubt the Hall of Mirrors, designed by Mansart. During the next century, under the reign of Louis XV, the Chapel and the Opera were completed. The Chateau ceased to function as the seat of official power in 1789 with the French Revolution. The gardens at Versailles initiated the tradition of the typical ? French garden, ? complete with labyrinths, fountains and other decorative statements. The Orangery at the Chateau of Versailles was designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart in the 17th century. Built between 1684 and 1686, before construction had even started on the Chateau itself, the Orangery is situated beneath the ( Parterre du Midi). It is made up of a central gallery of 155 metres in length, with a south-facing facade.

VERSAILLES PALACE - THE GRAND TRIANON, THE PETIT TRIANON AND MARIE - ANTOINETTE'S ESTATE

By Jacques Vichet

The Grand Trianon was designed by Jules Hardouin Mansart in 1687, on the site of the ? Porcelain Trianon ?, which had been constructed in 1670 under the orders of Louis XIV. He wanted to construct a private residence, where he could escape from the pomp and show of the court, and enjoy time with his mistress Mme de Montespan. Built in pink marble, whence the nick-name ? the Marble Trianon ?, the Grand Trianon is undoubtedly the most refined group of buildings within the Versailles Estate. The Petit Trianon was built under Louis XV, close to the Grand Trianon, in compliance with the demands of his favourite mistress: Madame de Pompadour. However, Madame de Pompadour, for whom the chateau was built, died on the 15th April 1764, without ever having seen the completed work. It was with his new favourite, Madame du Barry, that Louis XV inaugurated the Petit Trianon. Marie-Antoinette, the wife of Louis XVI, liked to go to this chateau, which had been given to her by the King, to seek out a more simple lifestyle, away from the formality of Versailles. The Queen's Hamlet, not far away, was made up of a dozen farm buildings, in the traditional Norman style. The hamlet gives us a glimpse of Marie Antoinette's true character. The Queen enjoyed coming here to milk the cows and goats, which were meticulously cared for

    ENGLAND/WALES

From the small island country of England, Great Britain emerged into one of the world's greatest empires. Its tale is woven with Shakespearean sonnets and royal ambition. Bestowed with castles, Vikings, Knights and Druids, Great Britain became a land of destiny. Once a land for those to conquer later became the conqueror. Although born along the simple, quiet hilltops of England, Great Britain swiftly expanded its boundaries into neighboring-Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. GERMANY

From the Rhine to the Bavarian Alps Germany is one of Europe's most scenic regions. Its colorful landscapes have inspired the music of Beethoven and Bach, and the ingenuity of Johannes Guttenberg's printing press. At approximately 138,000 square miles Germany is the fourth largest country in Europe. From the 15th to 19th century the rise of German culture permeated throughout Europe and its affects reformed the world. After World War II, allied victors divided the country into East and West Germany. It remained two different countries for nearly 45 years. As we now enter the 21st century, Germany is once again influencing the world with its industrious strength and inventive spirit.
