SCIENCE IN FOCUS: ENERGY
All plant and animal life depends on obtaining energy from an external source in order to survive. The transfer of energy is examined here as a biochemical process that includes both photosynthesis and respiration in plants, and respiration in animals. The primary source of energy for almost all living things is the sun. Solar energy enters the food web through plants by photosynthesis, and then passes to animals, including humans. Students are asked to quantify the energy they consume and expend.
