The forms of potential energy are gravitational, elastic and chemical. Potential energy transfers to kinetic, or moving, energy. The states of matter (solid, liquid and gas) are explained in terms of the matter's average molecular kinetic energy. The potential chemical energy released in a controlled explosion is quantified at the molecular level when the recombination of atoms in a chemical reaction releases energy. The principles of thermodynamics and the law of the conservation of energy are demonstrated.
