The first part details efforts under way to improve the lives of the 150,000 people living on the active "Smoky Mountain" volcano near Manila, where the city dumps its garbage. Life on the South Pacific island of Kiribati is shown as something less than paradise. Isolation, poor soils, limited resources, scarce drinking water, and frequent, devastating hurricanes make life a daily struggle for residents.
