FAMILIES OF THE WORLD: FAMILIES OF EGYPT
In Egypt, we visit two Muslim families. Seven year old Yasmine and her brother live near Cairo in a development surrounding a golf/tennis club, where her mother manages the tennis program. Her father works for an international oil company. Yasmine goes to an international school where classes are taught in English, and she takes French and Arabic. She loves her ballet class and tennis lessons. They buy groceries at a supermarket and go to a toy store to buy a birthday gift for a friend. On Saturdays, the family has lunch with one set of grandparents and dinner with the other, making for a great weekend together.

In Luxor, famous for its monuments and Valley of the Kings tombs, 6 year old Hesham lives with his parents, sister and week-old brother. His father supervises workers who maintain and restore one of the largest tombs in Valley of the Kings. They are staying with their grandparents while his mother recuperates from giving birth. Hesham then attends a big celebration for the one-week birthday of the baby and eats with the family. Later, Hesham and his father pray together, and have a picnic on a boat with the other children.
