AT ONE O'CLOCK on April 9, 1865, General Robert E. Lee rode into the small town of Appomattox Court House, dismounted, and entered the McLean House. General Grant, surrounded by generals and staff officers, soon followed. The two supreme leaders of the epic Civil War were about to bring four years of bloody fighting to an end. Dozens of officers, horses, and onlookers waited outside ¡ª the mood was somber and filled with anticipation. After 90 minutes, Lee and Grant emerged. To the silent salutes of Union officers, Lee rode back through the village ¡ª to his defeated army.

The home that hosted the meeting became a sensation after the surrender. It also became a potent symbol ¡ª for it was at this iconic location that Lee and Grant set the stage for a process of peace and reunion ¡ª so that the healing could begin ¡ª and that first step was taken here, at Appomattox.
