A Chinese parable says that a red string ties each mother with her baby, even if the child is born thousands of miles away. A baby girl is relinquished by her birth parents in China; she is adopted by an unmarried woman in the United States. What then?

THE RED STRING takes an intimate look at how four mother-daughter pairs create and incorporate culture, heritage and tradition in their families. The mothers ¨C three Caucasian and one Chinese American ¨C and their young Chinese-born daughters share their thoughts and feelings about their choices, culture and single-parent families.
