Child care employees learn OSHA standards and training designed to establish a safe child care environment. During a hazard communication program workshop, employees learn definitions, understand the need to develop a safety attitude, become aware of products used at the center, and learn how to protect themselves and others. Duties and responsibilities of managers, supervisors and employees are explained. Other topics include container labeling, non-routine tasks and material safety data sheets (MSDS).
Continuing the workshop on OSHA standards and training, the program teaches four rules for the safe handling of body fluids, use of personal protection equipment, handling exposure incidents and confidential record keeping. In addition, viewers explore the use of Universal Precautions-an approach to infection control that focuses on use of barriers to protect the employees, correct hand washing procedures, proper disinfection of the environment and use of hazard control equipment, such as body fluid kits and playground kits.

The issue of finding suitable childcare is one of the most important decisions facing parents today. Whether you work by choice or necessity, you will be faced with the same concerns. What is the best childcare situation for my child and how do I find it? Each section is introduced by short interviews with parents asking questions and voicing their concerns about different aspects of the problem. These are followed by illustrations and information from experts in the field including representatives from national organizations concerned with childcare, early childhood development experts, and family therapists. Perhaps most valuable are the tips at the end of each section from parents who have solved the problem in creative and practical ways. Through the eyes of parents, providers, children and experts, this film examines the current child-care crisis. Yet child-care providers earn so little that turnover is a staggering 40 percent a year.

This program employs the narrative of parents, teachers, and administrators who pay a visit to two inclusive infant-toddler centers; some preschool laboratories focusing on storytelling, oral literature, and the visual arts; a teacher workshop; and a preschool center that emphasizes books, imagination, and emerging literacy.
All these centers for children under age six have continuity of care over two or more years, close relationships with families, and strong professional development programs for teachers. The program and the accompanying viewer's guide cover the topics of physical environments, teachers' ideas about working with children across a range of skills, and use of materials and community resources.
This 3-hour training workshop is an introduction to the many aspects of challenging behavior, including the strong feelings this behavior may evoke in the providers themselves.
Possible causes, both biological and environmental, are discussed as part of an effort to see these children in a more positive and optimistic light.
The workshop stresses the importance of children's relationships with the adults who care for them and of the need for accurate observation. Possible strategies are discussed to help early-childhood educators build relationships with children who exhibit challenging behavior.
The workshop seeks to change provider attitudes from those of defensiveness and exclusion to optimism and inclusion. The facilitator's guide includes the workshop text, videotapes with segments to use in the workshop, handout masters, and background material for trainers.
This documentary film was shot over the course of a year at a cooperative nursery school. In it the viewer observes children playing, creating, discovering, crying, fighting, and resolving their disagreements. He will also see parents and teachers experiencing the spectrum of interactions and emotions that arise in the course of a school day.
Commentary is provided by school director Effie Kuriloff who practices a form of parent education that is both child- and parent-centered. Kuriloff explains: "Whether dealing with a conflict over a wagon in a nursery school or a rivalry between siblings in our family, we are confronted daily with situations that require our assessment and action.
As parents and teachers we must make decisions to intervene or not, to speak or to remain silent. How can we learn to see clearly the child in his world? How can we affect the world the child lives in?
To address these issues we must learn to "see" both the child and ourselves. Every social transaction -- whether on a playground, in the classroom, or on a bus -- is a teachable moment. Each interaction offers another chance to learn, to change and to grow for both the teacher and the child."
