    APHASIA: STRUGGLING FOR UNDERSTANDING

What if your ability to speak or understand speech was taken away with no warning and you struggled to find words that just won't come? This is what happens to people with aphasia, which occurs when the language centres of the brain are damaged by stroke or brain injury. While it affects more than 100,000 Canadians, many people have never heard of it. But there are ways to help aphasics express themselves.

READING THE WORLD: CONTENT COMPREHENSION WITH LINGUISTICALLY DIVERSE LEARNERS

By Anne Goudvis and Stephanie Harvey

Kids love to explore the real world-as young scientists they observe and relish nature, and through social studies they investigate other times, places, and cultures. In this series of three videos, authors and staff developers Anne Goudvis and Stephanie Harvey welcome you to the child-centered classrooms at Columbine Elementary in Boulder, Colorado, where the majority of the children are English language learners. In these culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms, kids read, write, talk, listen, and investigate their way through the curriculum, developing a common language for reading, writing, and speaking English.

Join Anne and Steph in these classrooms where effective comprehension strategy instruction is integrated with content knowledge acquisition in science and social studies. The instruction students experience is responsive to the learning and language needs of English language learners in the primary and intermediate grades, giving them tools to understand and actively use information and ideas, and learn English along the way. Purposeful talk is central to instruction, as kids discuss and try out their ideas with each other, developing the confidence to become independent learners.

1: Content Comprehension: Across the Day and Throughout the Year
The first video provides the big picture-the school's vision as described by ELL consultant Nancy Commins, who shares practices that result in thoughtful, effective teaching and learning for all students. Observe classroom teachers, the librarian, and ELL teachers as they plan ways to engage kids, teach responsively, and differentiate instruction all day long. Peek into classrooms where kids are engaged in investigations with insects and tackling big ideas about immigration in social studies. For English language learners, reading and writing across the curriculum is a powerful tool for acquiring new information and then synthesizing it to share new learning with others.

2: Learning and Wondering About Science
We join first-grade teacher Brad Buhrow, whose kids are up to their ears in insects-observing them, reading and writing about them, and illustrating their own learning on large posters. As they read engaging information, the kids use comprehension strategies to enhance their understanding of insects. Brad and librarian Nell Box confer with these young readers and writers as they tackle their own research questions.

3: Exploring Immigration in Social Studies
Anne Goudvis, fifth-grade teacher Steve Ollanik, and several classroom and ELL teachers, collaborate with the librarian to integrate comprehension instruction with content as they engage the kids in an immigration topic study. Students read picture books to bring big concepts and themes to the surface, gather information from historical texts and photographs, and write their own immigration stories. Zeroing in on kids' conversations in small-and-large groups demonstrates the importance of talk and discussion as a cornerstone of learning, especially in classrooms with English language learners and native speakers.

All kids respond to high expectations and thoughtful instruction. They become a community of learners when we challenge them to think more fully and deeply about topics of consequence-those that matter in their own lives and in the larger world.

    SIGNING AND LANGUAGE

Scientists have only recently begun to show interest in signing as language; the common assumption was simply that sign language was a kind of substitute for the spoken word, using the hands to form letters and words. But now linguists have come to realize the range of sign language, both structurally and grammatically, and to understand that sign language offers all the possibilities of spoken language: rich vocabulary, rhetorical expression, metaphor, word -play, puns, and poetry are all within the grasp of the Deaf and hard -of -hearing who use sign language for everyday communication.

OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF BABES: THE ACQUISITION OF LANGUAGE

Here is a rare opportunity to see and hear the chronology of language acquisition during the first six years of life. We see active youngsters talk and are able to note the gradual progression that occurs from random babbling, to jargon and one-word sentences, to the use of complicated structures and linguistic concepts.

The film emphasizes how children seem to learn language on their own, as part of their biological maturation, extracting the rules of grammar from the language they hear around them.

Peter and Jill de Villiers of Harvard University, researchers in language acquisition, provide a clear and informative description of linguistic development. Equally interesting are the carefully structured games and tests they devised for their research.

    Reviews
  • "An absorbing film-a clear descriptive approach to linguistics. It offers an excellent opportunity for clinical specialists to listen to normal speech." - Dr. Edward Mysak, Professor of Speech Pathology, Teachers College, Columbia University

  • "... will interest parents and care- givers in public library audiences and will fascinate future and practicing educators..." - Booklist

HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE, 2ND EDITION

    Taught By Professor Seth Lerer

Sixteen centuries ago a wave of settlers from northern Europe came to the British Isles speaking a mix of Germanic dialects thick with consonants and complex grammatical forms. Today we call that dialect Old English, the ancestor of the language nearly one in five people in the world speaks every day.

How did this ancient tongue evolve into the elegant idiom of Chaucer, Shakespeare, Twain, Melville, and other great writers? What features of modern English spelling and vocabulary link it to its Old English roots? How did English grammar become so streamlined? Why did its pronunciation undergo such drastic changes? How do we even know what English sounded like in the distant past? And how does English continue to develop to the present day?

The History of the English Language, 2nd Edition, is Professor Seth Lerer's revised and updated investigation of the remarkable history of English, from the powerful prose of King Alfred in the Middle Ages to the modern-day sermons of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Throughout its history, English has been an unusually mutable language, readily accepting new terms and new ways of conveying meaning. Professor Lerer brings this second edition up-to-date by including discussions of the latest changes brought about through such phenomena as hip hop, e-mail, text messaging, and the world wide web.

  • Stops to consider if a phrase or word is "proper"
  • Savors a colorful idiom or slang phrase
  • Is concerned about the use-and abuse-of English
  • Is just plain curious about words?

Then you will find these 36 half-hour lectures endlessly fascinating and immensely rewarding.

UNDERSTANDING LINGUISTICS: THE SCIENCE OF LANGUAGE

    By John McWhorter

We all use language every day of our lives. Language, regardless of the particular dialect spoken, is the tool we use to express our wants, our needs, and our feelings.

Recently, many experts who study language have become convinced by an idea about this remarkable human trait that was, only a few decades ago, utterly revolutionary. These experts believe that the capacity for spoken language and the rules for its structure are not cultural but universal-a set of rules shared by humans in every culture and that even may be hardwired into our brains. Moreover, these rules apply regardless of which of the world's 6,000 languages are being spoken.

But what are these rules? How do they work? And how can knowing them enhance your experience of the world?

The 36 lectures of Understanding Linguistics: The Science of Language-taught by acclaimed linguist, author, and Professor John McWhorter from the Manhattan Institute-are your opportunity to take a revealing journey through the fascinating terrain of linguistics. You focus on the scientific aspects of human language that were left out of any classes you may have taken in English or a foreign language, and you emerge from your journey with a newfound appreciation of the mysterious machinery built into all of us-an appreciation likely to surface time and again in your everyday life.
